Verne Traudt, manager of
utilities, said UNL has a
one-month supply of fuel oil to
run their steam power plant.
UNL has 1.15 million
gallons of fuel oil to use if the
natural gas supply to the
University is cut. The power
plant can burn 40,000 gallons
of fuel oil on a winter day.
Traudt said UNL is on a
standby natural gas basis,
where the supplier can shut off
the supply of natural gas at his
option.
"UNL has been shut off
more and more each year,"
Traudt said.

We care about conserving energy. Even
though we're in the business of sell
ing electrical energy, we don't like
to see it wasted.
Here are some ways you
can save electricity during the air conditioning season...
O Find a comfortable thermostat setting and don't
change it. Every time you lower the setting,
you raise the cost of operation. Operating your
unit below 76 can cost you as much as 10 per degree.
O If you're going to be gone for several days, turn
your air conditioning off. When you return, set
it at your comfort level, not lower. A lower thermostat
setting will not cool your house faster it will
simply make the air conditioner operate longer.
Leave your air conditioner
on at night. Studies show that a
house, its walls, furniture
and occupants begin to
absorb heat when the
sun rises and
continue to do so all day.
It's generally more economical
to retain your comfort level than
to have to reclaim it daily.
