DTD Compel Five young married couples learn how important their own marriages are, as they play matchmaker for their bachelor friend in the University of Nebraska - Lincoln 1973 Repertory Theatre's production of "Company" by George Furth. The musical comedy of love and wedded bliss in a New York high-rise apartment house will be staged at the Howell Theatre, opening at 8 p.m. on June 29. David Bell, the stage director and choreographer, describes the show as the plight of a man, Bobby, who is approaching middle age and see emptiness in marriage and in his own lonliness. Bell, 23, from Charlottesville, Va., has performed over 80 roles since he started in theatre at age six. And he has directed 20 plays. Repertory easier He said the repertory theatre is easier for an actor. The actor doesn't lose his concentration because he is not presenting the same play night after night. Although he has received more lucrative offers Bell said he comes back to Nebraska to work with the repertory theatre in the summer so he can work with the top porfessional. This is his third summer. Bobby interacts with five married couples throughout the play, Bell said. One couple gets a divore so they can be free, but then decide to live together. When the husband went to Mexico to get the divorce, he enjoyed it so much he invited his former wife to join him, Bell said. Always outside Bobby is played by Randy Oglesby of Charlottesville, Va. Oglesby describes Bobby as a "person who is always outside, objectively watching. . . who depends on his relationship with the five couples." "Bobby has a lot going for him, but all his friends are married and he feels separated from them. The five wives are attracted to Bobby put they also mother him. It's a play with many ambiguities," Oglesby said. One of the wives is Joann, played by Susan Baer, Miss Baer is also Kate in "The Taming of the Shrew" opening later in the season. Miss Baer said "Company" is about "a single man who has to make a decision between protecting himself and getting involved. . . he looks at marriage from five angles and he sees the bad and the good." A tough cookie "Joann is a tough cookie, in her third marriage, who gets Bobby to see what he wants out of life," Miss Baer said. Miss Baer attended UNL for three years before joining Bell, Oglesby and a few others in a Cabaret act they presented in nightclubs and restaruants during the past year. Bell said he plans to teach at UNL first semester and then join Miss Baer and Oglesby in New York. The three want to make a name in New York. Bell praised the work of the technical staff, who work 14 to 18 hours a day. Jerry Lewis is lighting designer, Nancy Meyers is set designer and Robert Mond is technical director. Gary Lamp of McCook is music director. Stephen Sondheim The play was originally produced on Broadway by OW Harold Prince where it won the Best Musical Award, the Tony Award and the New York Critics Award. Music and lyrics were written by Stephen Sondheim.
