A St Jacket needs full attention Review by Larry Kubert The Day of the Jackal is not the type of movie at which an audience goes half-alseep and expects to be entertained. Adapted from Frederick Forsyth's political suspense novel, Jacket is about a hired assassin's plot to kill French President Charles de Gaulle and the French police's attempt to stop him. Director Fred Zinnemann has used several techniques to obtain realism. Unfortunately the movie-goer who does not focus his attentions on the movie from the beginning may find himself confused mid-way through the film. Zinnemann used lesser known actors in various roles and American audiences who are used to having a star in every movie may have a difficult time keeping the faces and the roles straight as the plot twists and turns. Use intellect But for the viewer that approaches Day of the Jackal with a desire to use his intellect, the complexities are an absolute delight. The Jackal, played by Edward Fox, is a professional political killer hired to assassinate de Gaulle because he grants independence to Algeria. Fox gives a fine portrayal as the innocent-looking killer, who transforms himself into a Danish school teacher to get into Paris and an aged army cripple to get inside police lines. The police of England and France learn that the Jackal is on his way, but neither can stop him from getting into France. Michel Lonsdale shines as Commissioner Lebel, middle-class policeman who seems embarrassed to be working on such an important case, but through whose wiliness that the case is cracked. Builds tension After a superb building of tension as the Jackal closes in on de Gaulle for the kill, many may find the conclusion anti-climatic. Zinnemann's ending fits in with the realism that he strives to present in the rest of his film. American audiences are accustomed to seeing large-scale shootouts in spy pictures, but there is nothing grand or glorious about assassination. Zinnermann gives the audience the only kind of ending that will meet the movie's high standards. American audiences may find it difficult to appreciate Day of the Jackal, but without a doubt, it is a step above the majority of the films that the United States has to offer in this genre.
