Voss said she u:.rs a !ec!a e ; ! coson pi est" nt.ition. hi r ring linger your weddings JW Shp said she injects examples cjf basic concepts by involving relationships between her students and herself. "These relations can be read about in books, but I try to acquaint students with them in leal life, in terms they can understand," she said. After teaching in universities for 11 years, Voss loo. Downtown 1129 '0' 10:00 to 5:30 lrturs. 10:00 to 9:00 0 V said she has developed an individualistic approach to teaching instruction. "One must try to provide a variety of ways for people to learn. Any institute of higher learning must provide students with an educational experience they would not have if they were not there." Oral participation is important as a learning technique in her classes, she said. "But you can't invade a student's right of privacy. You can't force a student to talk. There are many listeners who participate by listening, which is their option. "In discussion I try to encourage comments which are not based on just opinion, but which are relevant and have a strong basis behind them," she said. John Woodward, her department chairman, said Voss is a warm, outgoing, compassionate individual, who is always prepared. "Her method is student-interaction. Award winner Hogue said he likes to teach because his students offer him as much as he offers them. Although his courses vary each time they are presented, Hogue said he sees himself as a traditional teacher using the lecture and class participation method. Hogue said he thinks students often feel intimidated by each other which can hamper vital communication. To promote a good rapport in his class, Hogue said he generally invites individuals to his home early in the semester and encourages an informal atmosphere. He said he believes that an instructor should not "lean on a student if an answer is not known." Instead, he said he tries to encourage individual participation by asking provocative questions. Hogue teaches several American literature classes. He has taught on the university level for 19 years. "I try to tie the material and the author together with his time. Historical context is very important," he said. "It adds enjoyment and promotes a better understanding of the work. "It keeps me young to see ideas being formed and articulated," Hogue said.
