Awareness days are today and Friday. An educational conference is scheduled this morning as part of the two day event. The conference will "bring out issues facing Mexican-American students at the University," Renteria said. "The stress is on education-because it is the only way to become competitive and stay on top," Renteria said. "The only way this will come about is for the universities to give Chicano students equal opportunities for education," he said. The programs are not limited to Chicano students. Renteria said he hopes the new awareness gained will help people understand Mexican-American needs. The M ex i ca n - American Student Association (MASA) and Renteria are in charge of the program. "The thing the students are striving for is education," Renteria said. "They want to see more Mex ican-American students graduate from college, as well as a general increase in college enrollment." There are 50 Mexican-American students attending UNL' Renteria said he believes more classes are needed at UNL that will meet the needs of the Chicano Student. Awareness Days are financed by the Nebraska Union Program Council, ASUN and the Chancellor's office. Joe R en teria... Chicanos need educational opportunity. SOPHOMORES!
