p.iu.' 2 Library staff agrees with ASUN survey by Robin Pilus The recently completed UNL library study has brought positive reactions from library staff nu-mbers. A Brigham Young University survey team was hired in February by ASUN to study complaints about the library system. The library staff, in a report released Tuesday to the Daily Nebraskan, said this was one of the first outside efforts made in recent years to analyze why library service at UNL is below par. The report said they agree with the findings of the consultants that UNL library facilities are poorly equipped, impossible to arrange logically, inadequately lighted and poorly ventilated. Although the addition to Love Library now under construction will lessen the problems, according to th? faculty response, "it must be clearly understood that most of the service points now being used in Lov? Library will continue in operation after the completion of the addition." The report said the staff supports the survey team's recommendation that the renovation of Love Library be given top priority. The consultants stated that under existing conditions a student attempting to find a book "is faced with a very confusing situation." According to the staff report the problems caused by the constant moving of books is recognized. The staff said it endorses the merger of the card catalogues and the disbandment of the College Library collection in Love Library to help ease the problem. Other steps taken by the library to simplify location problems include hiring a professional consultant to survey Love Library, rpiace directional signs and place government documents near the information desk. The survey team recommended a uniform loan and fine system be implemented throughout the library system. Although the library staff report said there are difficulties in assessing fines when there is often no security or attendant on duty, a new lending code is being planned for the 1973-74 academic year. In response to the statement made by the survey team that "the library is basically underused." the faculty said "...this is one area in which the libraries at UNL fall short." The staff report went on to say that "of even greater importance is that UNLvfist provide a good library of books and services." The survey committee stressed that "this library system has attempted to be a research library system at the expense of other users, notably the undergraduate students. "It has never been the intent of the library administration and staff to make Love Library primarily a graduate and research-oriented facility," according to the library staff report. "We feel that the survey team did not understand the purpose of the present Undergraduate Library," The staff recommended that areas of concern be reviewed jointly by the UNL Administration, the Executive Committee of the library faculty and the library administration. Inadequate staffing is one pioblern which needs to be reviewed, accoidmg to the report. "There is insufficient staff at piesent to eimit development of subject area specialties without damaging minimal library service ptoreduies," they said. Other problems mentioned which the staff said need consideration are faculty relationships, inappropriate salaries, long range planning in new programs and physical facilities and low staff morale. Candidate debate . . . Continued from p. 1. Rudolph said he generally believes schools should stay away from any issues which are not directly related to education. The UNL law professor said that means he's against a Lincoln Board of Education decision to disallow the circulation of the Lincoln Gazette, an underground newspaper, in public schools. He's also against discriminating against homosexual teachers, so long as the teachers keep their preferences in their private lives, he said. Board candidate Pearl Goldenstein, a housewife, concurred. "The fewer stands they (the board) takes on outside issues, and the more on education, the better," she said. Cracker jacks, candy stolen When some people get the munchies, they get them bad. According to Campus Security reports, about S30 worth of food was stolen last week from the concession stand at the baseball diamond. Items reported missing include 68 boxes of Crackerjacks, 199 candy bars, 28 packs of gum and one pack of cigarettes. J-School captures national honors Victories by two UNL journalism students in the William Randolph Hearst newswritmg competition have clinched first place national honors for the UNL School of Journalism. H.J. Cummins tied for sixth and Chris Harper placed 12th in the spot news category of the national writing competition. Both stories concerned activities at Wounded Knee.S.D. Both are Daily Nebraskan staff members. This is the third time the school has placed fust in the contest. The last times were 1963 and 1964. Nine students contributed to the first place- finish. Most of the prize-winning stories were written for the school's depth reporting class. Two students also placed in the contest's photo competition. The competition consists of six month long wilting contests. Sixty-one schools competed in the contest as the University of Southern California placed second this yeat and the University of Florida was third. coy nebraskan bditor-in Chief Tom Lonsworth.
