Geographers to examine plains' settlement "Images of the Plains: The Role of Human Nature in Settlement", is the topic for a conference sponsored by the UNL Department of Geography. It will be April 30 and May 1 at the Nebraska Center for Continuing Education. The theme of the conference, as stated in the program agenda, "...will be the manner in which various groups have perceived the environment of the North American plains region and how this perception has influenced behavior." The contributions made by Leslie Hewes, UNL professor of geography, to research the Great Plains in the last 25 years will be recognized by the conference, according to Brian Blouet, associate professor of geography. Blouet, along with Merlin Lawson, assistant professor of geography, organized the two-day conference. Most of the speakers have been academically associated with Hewes, Blouet said. The keynote address at the 9 a.m. Monday opening session of the conference will be by Andrew H. Clark, of the University of Wisconsin. According to Blouet, Clark is one of the most distinguished geographers in the United States. Among the speakers scheduled to appear at the conference are Waldo R. Wedel and John C. Ewers of the Smithsonian Institute and Herman R. Friis of the National Archives in Washington. The conference will close Tuesday afternoon with a summary session by a panel of scholars. Those in attendance will include professors and graduate students from the United States and Canada, Blouet said. He added, however, that the balcony in the auditorium of the Nebraska Center will be open for students. The conference proceedings will be published by the University of Nebraska Press. The conference is supported by the National Science Foundation, the Research Council of the University of Nebraska and the Cooper Foundation. SBpifi Do you need Space in The Union?
