Track men stumble in second west coast meet Nebraska's track squad ended its Western swing Tuesday in San Jose, Calif., by dropping a dual meet to San Jose State, 86-67. Coach Frank Sevigne's squad finished fourth in a quadrangular meet at Oregon University Saturday. San Jose boosted its dual-meet record to a 3-0 as it won 10of the 18 events against theCornhuskers. Winners for Nebraska were Gary Gressett in the 440 intermediate hurdles, Ron Childs in the long jump with a leap of 25-5 14, Lynn Hall in the 3,000-yard steeplechase with a time of 9:20, Leighton Priestley in the 440 with 47.8, Roger Chadwick in the 880 with 1 :57.6 and Bob Unger in the two-mile with a time of 9:17.2 In addition to the six individual winners, Nebraska also won both the 440 and mile relays. The mile relay squad of Chuck Malito, Wes Leonard, Jim Hawkins and Priestley won in a time of 3:22 while the 440-relay team of Priestley, Doug Gregory, Jim Novak and Karl Webb, clocked in :41.9. Although his team came out on the short end of both West coast meets, Sevigne said he was pleased by the performances. "This was our first outdoor competition of the year," he said. "And considering all the schools we competed against had been outdoors for several weeks, I think we did as wen as could be expected." Sevigne said he was encouraged by Hall's performance in the steeplechase. "That event (steeplechase) is new this year in the Big Eight Conference championships," Sevigne said. We wanted to find someone that would be competitive for Nebraska and I think Hall is going to fill the bill. The team arrived in Lincoln late Wednesday afternoon, and hardly had time to catch their breath before leaving for Lawrence, Kan., for the Kansas Relays on Thursday.
