Tmr.ksters challenae NCAA champ Saturday by Dave Sittler Nphraska's track tean opens its outdoor soaso'n Saturday in ambitious style as it travels to Eugene, Oe., for meet with UCLA, ' - ... , f Washington State and the University ot uregun. UCLA's track squad is almost as successful a; their basketball squad, as the Brum thmclads hive 'won the NCAA outdoor championship f tie the last t:o years. In their last outing, Coach Jim Bush's Bruins won a triangular meet from national track powers Kansas and Tennessee. Host team Oregon will have Olympic performer Steve Prefontame heading the Ducks who are coached by Bill Dellinger. Prefontaine, who will run the three-mile race in the meet Saturday, finished fourth in the finals of the 5,000 meter run at Munich s Olympic Games. The senior from Coos Bay, Ore., has won two NCAA cross country titles, three NCAA three-mWe titles and holds the American record in the 3,000 meters and indoor two-mile run. In his last race, Prefontaine won the Los Angeles Times Invitational indoor mile-run in 3:59.2, defeating another top American miler Marty Liquori. While the meet should be one of the toughest for Coach Frank Sevigne since he has been at Nebraska, the Husker coach is looking forward to the challenge. "I think the meet should prove to be very interesting," Sevigne said. "When you have a runner like Prefontaine, who I consider the best in America, you are going to have a fine meet." Junior Bob linger will be Nebraska's entry against the incomparable Piefontame. Unger ran against the Oregon ace last spring in Lincoln, finishing a distant second. "Unger has been running well for us dunng the indoor season and working extra hard getting ready for the outdoor meets," Sevigne said. Weather has been a big pioblem for the Husker team this spring as it has teen for all of Nebraska's spring sports. Although Sevigne is pleased with workouts so far, he indicated the West Coast schools have a big advantage on Nebraska. "The days we have been able to work outdoors we have had some very good, hard workouts," he said. "But those schools we will be competing against were working outdoors while we were still competing on the indoor circuit." The Husker coach said he thinks his squad should still be able to match the other teams on the track but will lag behind in the field events. "Ron Childs should give anyone in the meet good competition in the long and triple jumps," he said. "But our boys in the weights and other jumps just haven't had enough work to hope to compete with the type of competition that is going to be entered at Eugene." The Huskers will travel Tuesday to San Jose, Calif., for a dual meet against San Jose State after their encounter in Oregon. Sevigne said he thinks the two meets will be a big help to his team for the upcoming Kansas Relays which will be held in lawrence, Kan., April 20 and 21 . "The competition and the workouts we will get in these two meets should be just what we need going into the Kansas Relays," he said. "It will also give us a chance to look at some of our men and decide where to use them in future meets." Cornhusker track members and the events they are scheduled to compete in Saturday include: Karl Webb, 100 and 220-yard dashes; Leighton Priestly, 440-yard run; Roger Chadwick and Jeff Wisemiller in the 880-yard run, Jim Hawkins and Dan Speck in the mile; Lynn Hall, steeplechase; Unger, three-mile; Gary Gresset and Wes Leonard, hurdles; Doug Schmitz intermediate hurdles; Childs and Hopeton Gordon, long and triple jumps; Kent Loeffler, pole vault; Steve Cook, shot put; Steve Je'psen, discus; Wayne Ritchie, javelin and Dan Brooks and Steve Eymann in the high jump. Hockey team wins The UNL hockey team closed out its first competitive season last week by defeating Kansas, 1 1 to 2, at the Ak-Sar Ben Coliseum. Craig Smith led the assault on Kansas with three aoals. Smith's hat trick (three goals in one game) was the first by a UNL horkpv nlaver this season. Smith finished as the hockey team's leading scorer with 1 2 goals and nine assists. The win boosted the team's season record to eight wins and seven losses. "We were kind of surprised at finishing above .500," team member Bob Christoffersen said. "Not many first year teams in anything accomplish a winning record." r .dbi., .at a- a m ft m . ; - ' t v i ' 1 I VV I '",rr.
