Trotter promises commission
for improvement of libraries
A commission to implement
improvements in the UNL library system, as
recommended by library consultants, will be
formed soon, according to Vice Chancellor
for Academic Affairs Virginia Trotter.
The consultants, hired by ASUN,
reported a number of problems in library
operations after a three-day visit to campus
"It should be noted that many of the
problems pinpointed in the report are
problems that will be automatically solved
when the new library is finished," Trotter
"In fact, building the new library may
have led to sortw of these problems," she
In a 19 page report, the consultants from
Brigham Young Univers.ty in Provo, Utah,
said they found problems of student
confusion, poor staff morale and underused
space in the libraries.
Trotter said that. Love Library, charged
with being underused is "not conducive to
student use" and needs an overhaul. "It's
old, antiquated, has poor lighting and no air
conditioning," she noted.
The consultants recommended the
Legislature finance a project to remodel the
older building as an "integral part" of the
addition under construction.
However, Trotter said, the undergraduate
collection in Love Library, termed
"inadequate" in the report, has been
abolished since it "really was never used the
way it was thought it would be used."
She said poor service to undergraduates
currently is being corrected. "It's one of the
things we're really working on," she said.
Understaffing, a cause for many of the
problems mentioned in the report, is also
currently being corrected, she said.
One new staff position will be an
associate director for public service who will
be assigned to "improving services for
students and faculty members", she said
With all the recommendations in effect,
staff morale should also improve, she said.
