Nebraska's baseball team is cluing its best to keep up with
USC by adding a father son duo of its nun.
Husker baseball coach Tony Sharpe has son Sam playing

Sam Sharpe is considered rather valuable to his father's
team, as he was voted to the all Big Eight baseball first team
last year as a sophomore.

could obviously get touchy.

"I really don't feel any extra pressure playing tor my
father," Srm said. "I guess the pressure could build up, but all
my teammates are good about it and ust look on me as

Sharpe, in Ins 27th year as head coach at Nebraska, agrees
with Sam about the current situation on the Comhusker team
but said it has been different in the past.
"I don't think Sam has much pressure on lum because he is
pretty confident and fits in well," the coach said. "But when
my older son played foi me I think he felt the pressures of
playing for his dad. I could tell it m his play."
The elder Sharpe said that many fans thought he was
responsible for Sam being voted all Big Eight last yeai . But he
vitd that wasn't true because a coach cannot vote for a
member of his own squad in all league balloting.
Nebraska's football coaches and fans will
have their fingers crossed hoping today will
be a red letter day, a Big Red letter day, for
the Comhusker football program.
Today, high school football stars can sign
a national letter of intent, indicating which
universities have won the recruiting battles
for their talents.
Coach Tom Osborne and Ins staff have
been scouring the countiy for months
looking for the caliber of football player s
needed to maintain the level of excellence
achieved by Nebraska teams during the past
decade.
Now, after traveling thousands of miles
each week, the entire Nebraska coaching
staff will leave Lincoln today one last time
in hopes of securing the signatures from
some of the finest athletes across the
nation.
For Osborne, this may be the most
important day in his life smce writing to Bob
Devaney eleven years ago, asking for a
graduate assistant position at Nebraska.
he wants to be a part of the program.
While coaches are anxiously waiting for
this day to end so they know where they
stand with certain players, there arc other
people even moie anxious for April 4 to
pass.
Parents of many athletes are annoyed
with the recruiting tactics some coaches use,
they may wish their son played second-chair
trumpet in the school band rather than
football.
Many coaches hover around a player's
home so that the parents start to wonder if
they should add an extra guest room.
It's the same in basketball recruiting and
a prime example was the recruitment of
Tom McMillian who attend Maryland after a
highly publicized high school career,

with the antics of seveial coaches that she
finally baned every coach who came to her
door.

It's hard to imagine a man with the calm
and polite style of Tom Osboine upsetting
any patent. That may be the major reason
why Nebraska is expected to sign the best
athletes when this important day for college
football is finished.
