i M t vmil ! ri IP u Ko-op stumbles, head quits Associated Student Ko op's (ASK) student manager John Burg.. .said he will ask the ASK board members to name a new manager. The manager of the Associated Student Ko-op (ASK), John Burg, announced Tuesday he plans to resign his post in the four-month-old organization. Burg said he doesn't have the time to continue managing the Ko-od and building its resources. A meetinc, olso has been called for Thursday by the ASK board of directors to discuss the organization's future, according to Mark Hoeger, ASUN first vice president and board member. The board also will seek a replacement for Burg, he said. Burg estimated that 140 Ko-op memberships have been sold since Jan. 29. Hoeger said at least 1,000 membership cards will have to be sold to cover the organization's expenses and to repay J"$'2,450 loan from ASUN. The loan is due June 1 . "If they decided the Ko-op is going to be a flop," Burg said, "I think they should get out right now." However, Burg said he thinks the Ko-op has a chance to succeed this fall, especially if three or four more stores join this summer. The Ko-op cards, available to students for S5, provide discounts at nine Lincoln stores. Getting more stores in the Ko-op was the appioach Burg said he and former ASUN president Bruce Beecher had tried. "The students just weren't going to lay out money for discounts at stores they rarely use," Burg said. He said he has been working on a bookstore, two sporting goods stores, a bar and a movie theater. "Students don't dry clean the kind of clothes they wear now," was the reason a dry cleaners refused Ko-op membership, Burg said. What it's going to take to draw some stores into the Ko-op is "getting down there and getting into these peoples' offices and start bugging them," he said. Hoeger said Thursday's meeting may produce ideas for a more personal Ko-op membership drive. The machine which prints the Ko-op cards with a student's name, social security number, birth date and picture, would be easy to carry from its place in the ASUN Record Store, Hoeger said. The machine may be traveling to dormitories and Greek houses for group membership drives, he said. No one will purchase a Ko-op card unless one of his friends says what a good deal it is, Hoeger said. The Ko-op is excellent identification because it includes the student's picture, Burg said. This factor could be another reason for joining ASK, he added. But the future of Ko-op, both Hoeger and Burg said, may ultimately depend on the freshmen and students returning-with a fresh supply of money-to UNL next fall. ted 1V I ilMi MlBi IWTMrWMnllMIHi Mni II n ' 11111 ' 111 1 nil ' ci3! la f The Centennial Learning Festival is featuring a slide presentation by interim travelers on Greece at 7 p.m. tonight in the Commons Room at Centennial College.
