CSL okays civil evidence for disciplinary proceedings Legally obtained evidence, used in the civilian court conviction of a student, also may be used as a basis for UN L disciplinary proceedings, if a proposal to amend the Residence Hall Policy on Students' Right to Privacy is adopted. Prepared by Don Shaneyfelt, chairman of the Council on Student Life (CSL), the proposal was endorsed Thursday by CSL. The proposal would allow evidence legally obtained by civil authorities to be used as a basis for UNL disciplinary proceedings concerning on-campus actions "where the special interests of the University are involved as defined in the Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Code." Shaneyfelt said the proposal would allow items initially discovered in residence hall rooms by University employees to be used as evidence in UNL discipline proceedings, but only if that evidence has been legally obtained and used in civil court conviction. The current policy on students' rights to privacy does not mention the use of civil court evidence in UNL disciplinary proceedings. In other business, CSL heard a report from the Committee on Student Organizations, which was charged with preparing a policy to define the status of "all-University organizations." If approved, such a policy would permit campus organizations to grant full membership status to its University student, faculty and staff members and to its non-University members. . . All-University organizations should be recognized by CSL, according to committee chairman Phil Bohl. Bohl said recognition is necessary "For groups such as the University Friends of the Arts to function effectively." The arts group does not limit its membership to students. All-University organization are "desirable because they serve to bring faculty and students together as friends," according to Bohl. He said the organization committee plans to study further membership constitution and guidelines, student fee allocation and use of Nebraska Union facilities for all-University organizations. The committee is scheduled to report back to CSL next month. I - , J I'' ' tr ' ' . . '' r v CSL chairman Don Shaneyfelt . proposal may change evidence rules.
