Bob Devaney once said there were millions of people in
China that didn't give a darn about Nebraska football. That
may still be true. But there were some men in North Vietnam
who are interested in the Cornhuskers' performances.
Of particular interest to these overseas fans was Nebraska's
35-31 win over Oklahoma on Thanksgiving Day in 1971.
Word was released by the U.S. Navy that several
newly-released prisoners of war have expressed interest in
viewing the match that had been called the "game of the
century."
One request for the film came from Lt. Cdmr. Richard
Ratzlaff, a University of Nebraska graduate. Ratzlaff had been
a POW from 1965 until his release this week. Rear Adm.
Draper Kauffman, commander of the 9th Naval District at
Great Lakes, III., called NU President D.B. Varner after
Ratzlaff s request.
Kauffman told Varner that the film would be shown to all
POWs if available.
Varner called the athletic department office and relayed the
request to assistant football coaches Warren Powers and John
Melton.
Powers and Melton dug through the Cornhusker's film
library and found four reels of the game at Norman.
The film was raced to United Air Lines, which delivered it
to the Great Lakes Navel Hospital.
So, former NU student and ardent Husker fan Ratzlaff and
the other American POWs caught up on a bit of history that
they missed during their imprisonment.

Intramural champs
fall to SAE, 36-34
In a battle of intramural basketball powers, Sigma Alpha
Epsilon (SAE) led by former Husker Al Nissen, defeated
Kappa Alpha Psi (KAP), 36-34, Monday night at the Men's
P.E. Building.
For Kappa Alpha Psi, defending all-fraternity champion, it
was its, first regular season loss in two years.
SAE raced to a 25-14 halftime lead behind the shooting of
Gary Carbaugh and Nick Dean.
Dean hit the first basket of the second half to boost the
SAE lead to 13 points. But then KAP, led by Willie Harper and
ex-Husker basketballer Randy Watts, ripped off 10 straight
points.
During that spree Harper hit three baskets and Watts hit two
from 22 feet.
After a Jim Strasheim basket, Watts hit a 15-footer and
Harper scored on a lay-up to cut the lead to one.
Nissen hit a fielder and a free throw and Dean hit a basket
from the corner to up the SAE lead to 34-28.
Darwin Montgomery and Johnny Pitts of KAP hit baskets
before Mick Kingston of SAE iced the game with a 15-foot
shot.
"I felt it was the referees that beat us," Harper said after the
game. "We were playing against seven men."
"They've always caused trouble for the referees," said
Referee Tom Rich "I think even if you brought in Big Eight
refs, they'd get more fouls because their play is more rugged."
