The records of the 10 other teams wearing Nebraska colors might explain the enthusiasm for Tom Osborne's football squad. Of the 11 team championships in the Big 8 Conference in 1972, Nebraska was able to win only the indoor track title and finish second in football. After that things do downhill fast A survey of other Husker performances shows the wrestling team and basketball team just managed first division finishes. They both ended up fourth. Gymnastics finished fourth, but only six teams competed in the championships. The cross-country team had the next best Husker showing-sixth place. Coach Frank Sevigne's outdoor track squad didn't match the indoor squad's performance. The team finished seventh. So did the Cornhuskers baseball squad. Finally, Nebraska was last In three sports-tennis, golf and swimming. So it's easy to understand why Nebraska fans love the footbctl team. cbve sitter tnstaft. fepfey Some UNL coaches have been attacked by fans and even some players because of their squad's dismal showings. The problem of a proper coach-player relationship always has been stickey, but at least one jschool thinks it has the answer. Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, , has given its players veto power in coach selection. Team members also have the right to determine their own training rules. The team even votes on starting lineups. Although it's hard to imagine the defensive line telling Tom Osborne who to start next fall, disgruntled athletes in other sports might welcome changes such as those made at Oberlin. Many people think some sports will Improve after the new fieldhouse is built True, Nebraska has the worst indoor facilities in the conference. But when are they going to get the new fieldhouse? The outlook for the new fieldhouse is so bleak at the moment that Athletic Director Bob Devaney has said he hopes it is completed in his lifetime. So, for the moment at least, Nebraska's "other" sports can't count on the fieldhouse to save them. t;o:.:::ATCD pen - ( I Basketball . other" sports. one of "the ACADEMY AWARDS INCLUDING BEST ESE3T ACTfSS$3 LIZA MINNELU cist euFPOSiTi:a actgji joel grey zzy c:nSTcn bob fosse cist art DJnscnosi CS3T CCKZSKIAY csst fiui csmusa CS3T KUSSCAL CCOr.3 CSST CSST C!r5&ATOGi&APtfY NIGHTLY 7 ft 9:90 MATINEE SAT. & SUN. Fort scored 24 points, the game's highest individual output. Harris added 22 points. The win left the Huskers with 3-6 conference record and 8-1 3 overall. Coach Cipriano's Cornhuskers used a four-man zone defense with one man assigned to guard Kevin Fitzgerald, the Cowboy's leading scorer. . ... Although Fitzgerald finished with 22 points, Husker forward Steve Erwin harassed the southpaw shooter enough to allow only eight of 23 field goal attempts. Nebraska's zone also clamped down on Oklahoma State's leading rebounder, Andy Hopson. Hopson, who had grabbed 72 rebounds in his last three games, managed only 13 against the Huskers. The Huskers led 37-28 at halftime. Nebraska never relinquished that lead although Oklahoma State managed to cut it to five points three times after intermission. With Nebraska leading 63-58 with six minutes left in the game, Fort took charge. The freshman scored seven points durina the next 90 seconds to assure the Husker victory. Nebraska's Don Jackson and Tony Riehl also scored in double figurei Jackson had 13 points; Riehl had 10. It was the seventh straight loss for Coach Sam Aubrey's Cowboys. His team is in last place in the league, holding a 1-8 record. The Cornhuskers will host Kansas at 2:10 p.m. Saturday at tne UHiseum. The contest will be televised regionally.
