doily (nib(rgk(ni ggs j 1 Revitalized Huskers looking toward Oklahoma by Dave Staler Riding the crest of their biggest win of the year, Nebraska's rejuvenated basketball team heads south on Saturday for a Big Eight Conference battle against Oklahoma. Coach Joe Cipriano's Huskers are coming off last week's impressive 5946 win on the road against the Kansas Jayhawks. It was the first win at Lawrence for Cipriano in his 11 years at Nebraska. The win lifted the Cornhuskers' conference record to 2-5 and left them with a 7-12 season mark. ' Oklahoma received a crippling blow during their 64-52 loss Monday night at Missouri. The Sooners lost their 6-9 freshman center, Alvin Adams, with a broken arm. Adams, leading the conference in scoring, had 23 points against the Tigers before he was injured. "You really hate to see anything like this happen," Cipriano said, "But from what I've heard, when Adams went out, Oklahoma came back real strong. I'm sure they'll be more aggressive with the press now that they've lost him." Cipriano's cagers will be seeking a season sweep against the Sooners. Nebraska stunned Coach John MacLeod's team, scoring a 74-67 upset win on Jan. 15, at Lincoln. The Cornhuskers grabbed a season's high 43 rebounds in that game and were led by forward Lee Harris' 22 points and center Brendy Lee's rugged defensive play against Adams. MacLeod, whose team is 14-7 overall and 4-5 in the Big Eight, will start 6-9 Ted Evans in place of the injured Adams. Filling out the starting line-up for the Sooners will be Tom Holland, 6-9 and Russell Burks, 6-3, at forwards, with Mike McCurdy, 6-2, and John Gorman, 6-1, getting the nod at the guard positions. Skaters try to break .500 ice by Kim Ball The UNL hockey team will try to crack the .500 mark as it meets the UNO hockey team in Ak-Sar-Ben Coliseum on Friday night They will play immediately after the Omaha Knights-San Diego game. In only its first year, the team has compiled a 4-4 record, with all four losses to Iowa State. The latest contests with Iowa State were played Sunday and Monday at the Cyclone's Hilton Coliseum. Iowa State crushed UNL both days, 13-2 and 14-1. "Playing them is like Nebraska playing South Dakota in football," team member Rob Christoffersen said. 'They even had cheerleaders on ice skates." "The Iowa State captain said we had a pretty good team for our first year," Christoffersen said. "We're better now than Iowa State was when they started." UNL's wins include two against Creighton and two over an Omaha amateur all-star team. Another problem the hockey team has had is finances. The hockey team is not financed by the Athletic Department. It did receive $400 from the Department of Recreation and Intramurals. It is currently trying to get money from Corn Cobs to pay for its uniforms. The 18 hockey uniforms cost $700. In addition, the skaters must purchase ice time every time they practice, at least once a week. They practice at Benson Park in Omaha for $40 an hour. The money usually comes out of the players' pockets. "We've probably cashed out close to $100 apiece," Christoffersen said, 'The Iowa State trip alone cost each of us $25." Christoffersen said that unless the team receives money from the Corn Cobs, Friday's game with UNO may be its last. Cioriano was still pleased Thursday as he reflected over Saturday's win against Kansas. "This was one game where, when I looked at the scoreboard, it didn't make sense " Cipriano sasd. "The addinq and subracting of the two scores wouldn't balance-the mathematics of the thing didn't register. I looked up once and we were ahead by 15 points and I figued something just had to be wrong." He said the biggest factor in the Huskers' win at KU was the fact that they didn't panic when the 30-second clock began to run down. He added that several times the Huskers worked the clock down below eight seconds and their patience was rewarded with shorter shots. Cipriano will stick with the same starting line-up that was so successful against Kansas. Harris will join 6-4 Steve Erwin at forward with sophomore Don Jackson opening at center. Freshman Jerry Fort and senior Tony Riehl will handle the guard spots. Nebraska is averaging 61.9 points per game with Fort and Harris the leading scorers. Fort is averaging 13.2 per game, followed by Harris' 12.8 average. Harris drew the praise of Cipriano during a press luncheon Wednesday at the Nebraska Center for Continuing Education. "He has done everything we have asked for and more," Cipriano said. "His play has helped change it (the team) around." The 7:30 p.m. tipoff will mark the 1 14th meeting between the two schools, with Oklahoma holding a 60-53 edge in the series. Cipriano has a 17-7 record against the Sooners while Coach' MacLeod is 3-11 against Nebraska since becoming head coach at Oklahoma. snorts Cornhusker Head Football Coach Tom Osborne signed two more players to Big Eight football letters of intent with Nebraska. Signing were Calif ornians Ricahrd Dischner, a 6-2, 220-pounder from Santa Anna and Randy Garcia, a 6-2, 180-pounder from Los Angeles.
