Facing foreign situations Denise Gamache is a senior majoring in psychology and education. Behrooz Emam is a junior majoring in architecture and is an ASUN Senator. by Denise Gamache and Behrooz Emam The past years have seen growth in campus interest in international affairs and activities. New programs, such as International House and the Overseas Opportunity Center, were initiated with a dual purpose: to promote understanding among people of different nations and to aid foreign students with the problems they encounter when immersed in a new culture. For these and other programs to succeed, adequate imput from foreign students must be insured. The campus administration must be advised of the great interest in these activities. The needs and problems of foreign students must be. presented to different segments of the community to win their assistance in solving foreign student problems. 'ip With this in mind, a group of American and foreign students have met to plan an organization for these purposes. They are proposing an International Student Council (ISC) to represent international students and initiate social, cultural and educational activities for foreign students. For example, the council could manage the International Student Newsletter and plan foreign student orientations. Serving as an advisory body to the dean of student affairs and periodically to the vice chancellor for academic affairs, the ISC could comment on admission policies, tuition and services to international students. The council could improve communication between foreign students and other student groups and encourage foreign student input into ASUN, or the Council on Student Life. Other possible projects include cooperatively buying foreign food in large quantities, establishing a meeting place for international students and lowering insurance costs for foreign students. The establishment of the ISC would be a positive step toward accomplishing these goals. On Tuesday, at 7:00 p.m. in 345 Nebraska Union, a tentative constitution will be discussed and first steps taken toward organizing council. All interested students are encouraged to attend. The contributions of many international students are necessary to establish a truly representative body. run TPSjpMyKaif Toll nhe 3& BowFudf the Mew Iwritortfon Mid play Just fifu?
