Confidence in negotiations and in the general principles of
the Zumberge Plan was the general consensus of the College of
Agriculture faculty meeting Friday. .
In a formal meeting at the Nebraska Center for Continuing
Education, approximately 270 staff members from both
Lincoln and outstate Nebraska discussed the issues
surrounding a proposed administrative change for the College
of Agriculture.
Members voted to accept Earie Raun's motion expressing
confidence in negotiations between University administrators
and state agricultural organizations. Raun is associate director
of the agricultural extension service and professor of
entomology.
The motion also included a provision to conduct a mail
ballot of UNL agricultural staff members "when something
specific was at hand."
A second motion approved by the faculty was a statement
in favor of the general principles of the Zumberge Plan.
The Zumberge Plan, named fter its author, UNL
Chancellor James Zumberge, would create a vice-chancellor of
agricultural research and extension.
The dean of the College of Agriculture would continue to
be responsible for teaching and curriculum and would report
to the vice-chancellor of academic affairs.
The Zumberge Plan came as a response to an earlier
proposal made by Nebraska farm organizations. This proposal
would establish a center of agriculture, separate from UNL,
with a chancellor as its head. The chancellor would have direct
access to the president and the Board of Regents.
Earlier discussion at the College of Agriculture fsculty
meeting centered around a list of six faculty inspired
proposals. These proposals ranged from acceptance of LB 149,
the bill that would set up a separate College of Agriculture, to
various modifications of the Zumberge Plan.
Zumberge, who was in a closed meeting with farm
organization members most of the afternoon, made a brief
statement.
"Whatever is formulated here may not be what destiny has
in store for us. We have to keep in mind that the legislature is
involved," he said. "My suggestion is that this concerned group
does not lead us into a position from which there is no
flexibility."
Zumberge and NU administrators met earlier Friday with
representatives of Nebraska farm organizations. It was the
second meeting with the organizations which are proponents
of the split campus plan.
"We are making progress," Zumberge said Sunday, "but it
is premature to say anything yet."
The next meeting between NU administrators and farm
leaders will be Thursday in Grand Island.
