There is always a danger in reducing
people down to numbers the danger you
might depersonalize the group so much as
to preclude any understanding. But there
is valuable information in statistics, as far
as they go.
For example, if you study statistics
about foreign students on the UNL
campus, some misunderstanding can be
cleared up. Also some stereotypes can be
supported.
Most natives think most foreign
students are men. True, by a ratio of 471
to 75.
Most natives think most foreign
students are single. True by a ratio of 406
to 139.
Most natives think most foreign
students major in engineering or a related
field. True, for the most part. The most
popluar major among foreign students is
electrical engineering with 68 foreign
majors. Also, five of the six most popular
majors (electrical, chemical and
mechanical engineering, chemistray and
computer science) account for a full 35
per cent (195 students) of all the foreign
students on campus.
But that's about as far as it goes. The
third most popular major for foreign
students surprisingly is business
administration with 34 foreign majors.
Also, foreign students have chosen
majors from 66 of the 74 possible areas
of concentration. Their majors include
everything from English (eight majors) to
architecture (18), from political science
(eight) to geography (eight). Not every
foreign student is here to gain the
technical knowledge he needs to help his
country develop industrially-not by a
long shot.
There may also be some
misunderstanding about where most of
the foreign students come from, but there
is not as much diversity as with the
majors.
Almost 23 of the total foreign
student population on the UNL campus
come from Asia, over half of that group
from one country, Hong Kong. The three
largest contingents, Hong Kong (197
students), India (62), and Taiwan (40) are
from the orient.
They are followed by groups from Iran
(26 students), Nigeria (23) and Colombia
(21). Surpirsingly, there are only 12
students from all of Europe and only six
from Japan. Not so surprisingly, there are
none from mainland Communist China.
Here, then, are the numbers:
