J - v ; v - " -F - -'i win .II inn IM I II II ' ' 1 Phi Delts win 'Rain Bowl,' All-U crown by Kim Ball In what had come to be known as the 'Rain-Out Bowl', Phi Delta Theta defeated the Phi Delta Phi law fraternity, 20-13, in the A 1 1 -University Flag Football Championship Wednesday night at the Cather field. The game had been postponed four times in the last week due to rain and wet field conditions. A 27-yard touchdown pass from Bill Hamik to John Long late in the third quarter proved to be the winning score. The Phi Delta Theta score came just three plays after a Phi Delta Phi touchdown had tied the game. On their first play Trom scrimmage Phi Delta Theta scored. John Long threw to Paul Griego for the touchdown on a play that covered 58 yards. (Note: The intramural field is only 60 yards long.) A Chris Buetler interception, which stopped a Phi Delta Theta drive on the Phi Delta Phi 3-yard line, set up the first Phi Delta Phi touchdown. Phi Delta Phi led 7-6 at halftime. But Phi Delta Theta came right back after halftime. On the third play of the second half, Curt Bloom caught a 33-yard scoring toss from Tom Campbell to put Phi Delta Theta back on top, 12-7. Mike Peetz caught the extra point pass from Hamik to make the score, 13-7. But Phi Delta Phi, which had won 12 straight, was not to be denied. On a third down play, the combination of Hayes, Fiala, Elliot and Joe Armstrong hooked up for a 40-yard score to knot the game for a last time, 13-13. Peetz intercepted Hayes' pass for the extra point. Phi Delta Theta then began their series of downs which led to their winning touchdown. Phi Delta Phi had a chance to tie the game early in the fourth quarter as a Buetler to Armstrong pass put the ball on the Phi Delta Theta 10-yard line. But two outstanding defensive plays by Dave Smith, in which he knocked the ball out of Armstrong's hands and then faced Hayes to drop the ball, moved the ball back to the 28-yard line. Two plays later Phi Delta Phi saw their hopes for an All-University Championship go down the drain as Bloom intercepted a desperation pass thrown by Hayes. Hayes, the Phi Delta Phi quarterback, thought the Phi Delta Theta defense was the key to the game. The U.S. Olympic Committee accepted the withdrawal of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and voted to send the NCAA a bill for $2,000 in arrears on its dues. Nebraska flanker Johnny Rodgers, for the second time this season, was named Big Eight Conference offensive player of the week for his performance in Nebraska's 33-10 win over Colorado Saturday. Members of recreation departments at Big Eight schools will meet at the University of Nebraska Nov. 10 and 11. Forty representatives are expected to attend the meetings which will be held in the Nebraska Union. Pass could unlock Cyclone defense When Nebraska encountered troubles passing against Colorado, the Cornhuskers concentrated on a running game. The result was 210 yards on the ground and 130 yards through the air. Such results weren't very surprising. Colorado is third in ' Big Eight in passing defense and sixth in defense against rush. But Iowa State, this week's opponent at Ames, Iowa, presents a different situation. The Cyclones are third in the Big Eight in rushing defense and sixth in passing defense. Iowa State's defense has allowed 151 yards per game rushing and 176 yards in passing. ''Those passing statistics can be very misleading," Nebraska coach Bob Devaney said during Wednesday's workout. "Teams have had trouble running against Iowa State and have thrown the football more than usual." Iowa State's defensive secondary, however, is not as good as it was expected to be this season. All-American monsterback Matt Blair was injured early in the season and is sitting out the 1972 campaign as a redshirt. He has been replaced by John Schweizer who switched from a cornerback position. Schweizer has intercepted four passes, including a 19-yard touchdown interception. The Cyclone defensive secondary, although allowing 1232 yards passing, has intercepted 17 passes this season. Nebraska is the leading passing team in the conference. The Cornhuskers are averaging 242 yards passing per game. Sophomore quarterback David Humm, the Big Eight's leading passer, has completed 100 of 178 passes for 1,628 yards and 14 touchdowns. Nebraska flanker Johnny Rodgers, who leads the Big Eight in receiving with 724 yards, missed most of Wednesday's practice with a sore ankle. It was not believed to be serious, however. nnm r nn din p maws WSd i 0 U P if J i f i'?fi SHOPS NOW OPEN 12th STREET GARAGE JEANS UNLIMITED STEAK-O-RAMA NINA BOUTIQUE MID-CITY TOYOTA SCHAAK ELECTRONICS DISCOUNT RECORDS COACH HOUSE GIFTS DARK AT THE TOP m J, y I TP 'II SHOPS SOON TO OPEN HEADS TOGETHER Hair Salon CATHERINE'S RUNZA HUT HOLLYWOOD & VINE Mini Theaters LIU 12th &QUE STREETS n n I r r i 37 ( CD 3 MliMMI WHlUiMMBar kflflUMMHld fc tefifflttWtfitlli HlHWIttiSMtf fa 1 10 iQr CUP THE COUPON BELOW A ENTER TODAY!
