According to final vote projections, Nixon was winning in states with a combined total of 521 election votes. McGovern was only winning only Massachussets, New Mexico and the District of Columbia for a combined electoral vote of 17. Two-hundred-seventy are needed to win. Saying he would "not shed any tears," McGovern conceeded he had lost his race to become president at 10:30 p.m. In urging his supporters to "stand with your convictions," McGovern said the campaign was worth the sacrifice If the "day of peace" was pushed any closer as a result. Republicans apparently failed in their attempt to gain control of the U.S. Senate, which was held by Democrats by a 55-45 margin. The new Senui ...ould not be much different in political make-up. However, two veteran Republicans Margaret Chase Smith from Maine and Jack Miller from Iowa were projected' to lose their seats. Republicans appeared headed for a net increase of about 18 House of Representative seats. Democrats controlled the House by 35 seats before Tuesday's election. Kermit Hansen, University regent from Omaha's Second District, Jumped to 8n early lead over opponent Clifton Batchelder. Batchelder, a former state senator, was trying to unseat Hanson who was appointed to the Regents in 1970 to complete an unexpired 6-year term. With 6 per cent of the precincts counted, Hansen was leading Batchelder 14,470 10,308- In the Regent race for the First District, incumbent Edward Schwartzkopf was unopposed for re-election. Schwartzkopf was to have opposed S.H. Brauer, however, Brauer withdrew before the general election. Terry Carpenter was giving U.S. Senator Carl Curtis a tough race in early state-wide returns Tuesday night. Incumbent Curtis, is seeking a fourth straight six-year term.
