Students
prepare
for
contest
showing

Take a dirty, ungroomed
animal and turn it into a
prize-winner in one week?
That's the idea behind the
Little Ak-Sar-Ben
Showmanship Contest being
held this week on East
Campus.
UNL students each paid a
$1.50 entry fee last week and
drew a number for the species
they prefer. This week those
students are working to get the
animals in shape for Friday
night's show. The contest is
sponsored by the Block and
Bridle Club.
Beef and dairy cattle, swine
and sheep are provided by the
University for the show. For
the first time, a horse halter
class will be included, but
students must provide their
own horse.
During the week contestants
must wash and clip the
animal's hair, and polish its
hooves in order to get the
animal ready for the show.
Winners in each class will be
judged against each other. Each
winner will have to take charge
of one of the other winning
entries to show his expertise in
handling all types of animals.
During the break in Friday's
competition, East Campus
faculty and graduate students
will participate in a hog driving
contest. In past years cows,
sheep, goats, horses and
Cushman scooters have been
included with the hogs.
Block and Bridle Queen
Kathy Geiger will present the
awards to the winners.
Batchelder
will miss
debate
A debate between Second
District Board of Regents
candidates Clifton Batchelder
and Kermit Hansen has been
cancelled, according to Gail
Watson, Residence Hall
Association vice president.
RHA was sponsoring the
debate. Watson said, however,
that Hansen and another
incumbent for the board, Ed
Schwartzkopf of Lincoln,
would be at Harper Hall at
6:30 p.m. Monday for a
discussion with students.
Watson said Batchelder
notified RHA that he would
not be able to attend the
debate. He offered no
explanations.
