t f t V V W' ' -"r-air- Direct care aim of new drug center A drug information center opened October 9 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha attempts to involve pharmacists more with direct patient care, according to Dr. Larry E. Patterson, Pharmacy College staff member. Too often, he said, the pharmacist has been placed in a position of being the dispensor of the final product prescrip tions, and not the working part of a health team he should be. The role of dispensor must change, Patterson said; technicians or machines can dispense drugs. The center serves as a training place for senior pharmacy students, he said, for learning how to find answers in drug emergency situations. The second reason for opening the center is to help those directly involved in patient care such as doctors, dentists, nurses and dieticians. The center is to primarily serve the University Medical Center, he said, but outside calls will be accepted. This joint project of the hospital pharmacy and the Pharmacy College attempts to provide answers to drug-related questions. When an emergency situation arises, the answer to a drug question may be available within minutes. Occasionally, Patterson said, outside references may be needed.
