After pushing one's way through milling Psych 70 students,
the quiet and relaxed atmosphere of the Psychological
Consultation Center is a relief.
The Center, located on the first floor of Burnett Hall, is a
base for community-clinical psychology training. Its services
are available to the general pub..c as well as to University
faculty and students.
Consultants at the Center are graduate students working on
doctorates in clinical psychology.
University students who go to the Center for psychological
counseling are not charged for the service, according to C.H.
Haywood, director of the center.
He said it simply was a matter of choice. Students also can
go to the University Counseling Center or to the University
Health Center.
"We're not officially designated by the University as a
counseling service for students. Our basic work is with the
community," he said.
The Center utilizes the community-clinical approach it
looks at the whole community when attempting to solve social
problems, he said.
"Instead of saying, 'Come in if you're not well-adjusted,'
we take into consideration that sometimes the pr.qbjem lies
with the environment."
For example, fourth year student Bob Townsend said if a
child is brought in with a problem, consultants sometimes go
into the community and look at the school he's in.
"The focus is on how people interact in working through a
problem, " Haywood said.
"The major change in our orientation in the last three years
has been from individual client assessments to consultation
and training with groups concerned with rehabilitation and
prevention," he said in a report.

The report also said consultants-in-training work with other
professionals to determine strengths of the client and arrange
programs to capitalize on the individual's assets.
"Over 800 community volunteers have been trained at the
center," Haywood said. One example of the Center's training
programs is the Personal Crisis Service.
The Center also instituted a volunteer probation counselor
training project. The program was designed to evaluate new
ways of aiding probation programs, according to Haywood s
report

and try to discover the real problem of a juvenile being tried."
Other services offered by the center include group sessions
for parents without partners, workshops and seminars for
teachers and administrators, family counseling and welfare
counseling.
Haywood said that for a relatively small department,
consultants trained at the Center have had a wide choice of
positions when they leave.
"When they leave they don't start at the bottom, they start
at the top," he said.
15 per cent of fund goal
contributed within week
The university employes' United Fund campaign is 15 per
cent of the way to its $60,000 goal since getting underway
Monday.
Undersity employes have been contacted and urged to
return pledge cards. Rather than making a cash donation, an
employe can elect to use the payroll deduction method.
Funds from this year's drive will be used for Lincoln
projects.
Last year UNL employes contributed $44,364 to the
United Fund. Half of all employes donated.
If pledge cards are not returned to department volunteers
by Friday, they can be taken to 1025 Oldfather.
