That was the day their flag football team, Delta Tau Delta (Delts) 'B was playing the Delta Upsilon 'B' team. With the Delts leading 34-33 in the final quarter, Delta Upsilon halfback Steve Rictor rolled out to his right side looking for a pass receiver. He spotted Eric Maurstad downf ield and threw the ball. What happened next is what might be called flag football's freak accident of the year. Jorgensen and Peterson, the Delt pass defenders anticipating an interception, simultaneously leaped for the ball and collided in mid-air. Peterson was knocked unconscious instantly. Jorgensen lost consciousness shortly afterwards. Maurstad did make the pass reception but Peterson somehow managed to grab Maurstad's flag. Peterson now has no recollection of even trying to pull his flag. Kris Olson, the intramural student trainer at the time, and Howie Holland, the Delt health aid, administered first aid to the unconscious players. It was feared that Jorgensen might have broken his neck. The two Delts were rushed by ambulance to Lincoln General Hospital where they stayed for three days. It wasn't until after x-rays were taken that the extent of their injuries was known. It turned out that Jorgensen and Peterson had identical injuries. Both of them had suffered a spinal concussion, a compressed vertebrae and a slight head concussion. Doctors instructed them to wear neck braces for two weeks. Jorgensen, who just happens to be Peterson's roommate, has a strong belief in religion and believes the mishap was destined to happen to him. "If it wasn't that, I probably would have been hit by a car or something," he said. And when asked if they thought flag football was getting out of hand with all the physical contact, they both replied, "It's not rough enough." now p or ON S A LEI J J J j f&l IN CONCEflTj n A JyWed nesda v 1 1th aJ I PRICES: $4.00 - $5.00 - $0.00 II setts reserved III feli Gill! Rodgers paces punt returners After the first four weeks of the college football season, Nebraska has only two leaders in the Big Eight individual statistics. Nebraska's Johnny Rodgers, who scored on a 64-yard punt return against Minnesota Saturday, leads the Big Eight in punt returns with an 18.9-yard average. Rodgers has returned 15 punts for 284 yards. Leading Rushers The other Nebraska leader is Rich Sanger who leads the conference in kick scoring. Sanger has kicked 23 of 24 extra points and two fieldgoals for 29 points and a 7.3 point average per game. The Huskers, however, are far down the list in most categories.
