my freshman year of high school," List
remembered. He was a running back his
freshman year, a quarterback for the next
two, and was moved back to halfback for
his senior campaign.
He was "okay-well, pretty good I
guess" as a high school gridder. He was an
all-conference choice and was named to
the Michigan second team All-State
squad. Nebraska recruited him as a
running back, a position he played during
his freshman year.
In addition to his offer from Nebraska,
List was wooed by Michigan, Indiana,
Colorado State and Purdue, to try to
bolster their football fortunes.
Why did he choose Nebraska? It's
obvious for a guy who's been losing
three-quarters of the games he's played in
high school: "I liked the idea of
winning," he said.
So he ended up in Lincoln, Nebraska,
where he lives with his wife, Suzi, and his
two children.
Matthew is three-and-a-half years old
and he wants to know what "that black
thing" is. The photographer tells him it's
a camera and offers to let him peek
through it.
Tracy, who will be two in October, is
less interested in the official business at
hand. She figures the whole thing is silly,
anyway, so why not wave her blanket
around?
When Matt is given the choice of going

outside for a game of football or baseball
he ponders a minute and decides baseball
is more his game for tonight.
'The kids don't really know what
Jerry does," Suzi said when Jerry had left
the room to take care of some business
with Tracy. "They know a football
player, and they know their Dad plays,
but they really don't understand.
"In fact, on picture day this year Jerry
went off to talk to some people and Matt
