Frosh open against K-State
The Nebraska freshman football team opens its
season against Kansas State today at Memorial
Stadium. Kick-off time is 1 :30 p.m.
Frosh coach Jim Ross is confident his offense can
move the ball against K-State, but adds, "We know
nothing about them and we hope they know nothing
about us."
Glen Ray and Scott Copple will alternate at
quarterback for the Huskers. Ray, a 6-4, 205-pounder
from Midland, Tex., will probably get the starting
nod. Copple is from Lincoln East.
A third quarterback-Rick Lemerond from Green
Bay, Wis.-has missed a week of practice with an
illness and probably will not see action Friday.
Jim Belka from Prairie Village, Kan., will start at
fullback and the l-back spot will be headed by John
O'Leary from Port Washington, N.Y.
Four tackles will see action for the Huskers on
both offense and defense. Ron Pruitt, Steve Hoins,
Bob Lingenfelter and Jim Sledge are tackles who will
see double duty.

"We want to take a good look at them both
ways," Ross said.
Kansas State will run out of the pro-set offense
with David Livingston, a 6-4, 197-pound quarterback
from El Dorado, calling signals. David Cooper, who
has excellent speed, heads a fine crop of KSU
receivers.
Friday's game will also be the first for new
Cornhusker assistant coach Larry Zeno. Zeno, who
coached high school football in California, is the
freshman offensive backfield coach.
"' k we have a real good bunch of hustlers,"
Zeno said. 'This is the hardest group of football
players I've worked with in my six years of
coaching."
Nebraska students who present a regular season
football ticket will be admitted to the game without
charge.

Formula
for football
success
Most Nebraskans now have rationalized the loss to UCLA
with such sour grape conclusions as "It's better to lose the first
game than the fifth," or 'That loss taught us something and
we'll be a better football team because of it."
So, in an effort to satisfy those who are hungry for such
conversation, here's a quick way the Cornhuskers can win a
third straight national championship.
No. 1 -rated Southern California will lose to either UCLA,
Notre Dame or Washington. Oklahoma and Colorado will
battle each other and then both will lose to Nebraska. No.
4-ratcd Tennessee will lose to either Alabama or Auburn.
Then there's Ohio State. The Buckeyes, now rated fifth,
have the schedule in their favor. Their stiffest test will come
Nov. 25 when they meet Michigan. If they survive that, they
will then lose to USC in the Rose Bowl.
Alabama gets LSU in Birmingham this year. The Crimson
Tide will still lose, however. Even if 'Bama survives that,
there's always Auburn to gain a little revenge.
That leaves us with Nebraska as national champions. All the
Cornhuskers have to do is survive the Big Eight schedule and a
bowl game. How's that for rationalizing?
For those who thrive on records and statistics, here's
something that can keep you busy for the next three seasons.
It's a comparison game between David Humm and Jerry Tagge.
After Humm's first three games he has completed 32 of 56
passes (.571 pet) for 487 yards. After Tagge's first three games
during his sophomore year, he had completed 29 of 48 passes
(.604 pet.) for 343 yards. Tagge threw four interceptions in his
first three games. Humm has thrown three.
Humm's total offense mark is 475 yards compared to 444

Nebraska's Johnny Rodgers can establish a new Big Eight
receiving record Saturday. Rodgers has totaled 1,943 yards in
pass receiving and needs just 30' more to catch Hermann
Eben's mark of 1,973.
Eben, who played for Oklahoma State, established the
record from 1968-70.
NEBRASKA 41, Minnesota 7 . . . The Cornhuskers won't
call timeout to score that final touchdown as Colorado did
against the Gophers.
COLORADO 21,, Oklahoma State 10 . . . It's i tempting
to pick an upset in this one.
KANSAS STATE 28, Tampa 14 ... If the Wildcats lose this
one, they may not win another game the rest of the season.
IOWA STATE 35, New Mexico 14 . . . The Cyclones should
win easily even with Matt Blair and Jerry Moses on the injured
list.
FLORIDA STATE 31, Kansas 14 . . .The Jayhawks meet
their first of four Top 20 rated opponents.
CALIFORNIA 21, Missouri 14 . . .Both played poorly last
week. If they both play poorly again, California will probably
win. Missouri is just a little poorer.
OKLAHOMA 65, Clemson 10 . . . The Sooners will have a
tougher time a week from Saturday when they have an open
date.
Six returning lettermen
open cross country season
cross country coach Frank
Sevigne is optimistic as the
Huskers open their season at
Colorado Saturday.
Heading the list of
returnees is Lincoln junior Bob
Unger.
Besides Unger, Sevigne has
lettermen Jim Hawkins, Mike
Fertig, Roger Chadwick, Lynn
Hall and Dan Speck returning.
Sevigne says he doesn't
think the opener will give too
good of an indication of how
well the Huskers will do this
year. He says the altitude at
Boulder and the fact that it is
the first meet could have a
detrimental effect on the
Husker's performance.
