Student vets promote prisoner awareness The Student Veterans Organization (SVO) is sponsoring a Prisoner of War (POW) week starting Monday. Jack McCurftion, state coordinator of the Nebraska chapter of the National League of Families of Prisoners Missing in Action in Southeast Asia, will speak Monday in the Nebraska Union Ballroom at 10 a.m. McCurftion's son Michael, an N.U. graduate, was captured May 8, 1967. The group also is sponsoring a campaign for better treatment of POWs. Pre-typed letters urging that prisoners be treated according to Geneva Convention rules will be available in the veterans' booth in the Union from 10:30 to 3:30 every day this week. Letters will be sent to North Vietnamese officials, according to SVO spokesman Harry Malone. Veterans also will solicit signatures for a telegram to a joint Congressional committee on increased benefits for veterans. The House has approved a $25 a month increase for veterans going to school, raising total benefits for an unmarried vet to $200 a month. The Senate, however, passed a bill raising payments by 43 per cent. The joint committee must work out a compromise before Oct. 14, SVO Vice President Jack Olig said, or the measure will be delayed another year. 'We're hoping the telegram will get those people going and make them do something concrete," he said. Free bumper stickers and information about POWs will be available at the SVO booth throughout the week.
