At Ruth Staples Laboratory on East
Campus, bulletin boards hang two feet above
the floor and chairs and tables are made to fit
children ages 2 to 5. It's a day care center.
Twenty-two children, whose parents are
UNL students and employes, paint, paste, nap
and eat together at the center.
This fall, the center begins its third year
housed alongside a nursery school.
It provides a laboratory for practice teaching
and observing child development.
The center now has almost more Human
Development students than it can handle, either
teaching or observing, according to Betty
Cooke, director.
The staff-student ratio of one to four is
comparatively high, she said. Two staff
members have masters degrees, and one has a
bachelors. Even though state regulations don't
require a staff this well trained, the University
does, she said, because the staff supervises
University students.
The daily program starts at 7:30 a.m. and
allows for spaces of free time and planned
activities. Lunch and snacks are served to the
children. The day ends at 5:30 p.m. with
"Sesame Street."
