I rays to be removed from Crib entrance Nebraska Union Board president Dave Hoist said Friday that trash trays near the west entrance of 'The Crib" would be moved as a result of a request by black members of the board. The trays were tipped over by a group of black students more than a week ago, according to Hoist. The area where the trash trays are currently stationed is where black students traditionally have congregated, he said. The trash trays and recepticals were installed this year after 'The Crib" moved to a system where students remove their own trash. Some blacks considered placement of the trays in that area a slap in the face, according to Hoist. He said, however. Union officials did not mean it as such and the trays would be moved and replaced with seating. "While we don't condone viblence of any sort in the Union," Hoist said, "we'll try to be more sensitive to these sorts of things in the future. We'd like to avoid confrontations." Also at the urging of black board members, Union Board unanimously passed a resolution condemning racism on the part of any member of the Union staff. The Sept. 1 incident apparently stemmed from dissatisfaction with a black caricature that appeared in a University orientation booklet distributed to UNL freshmen. The Afro-American Collegiate Society (AACS) had demanded and received an apology for the drawing from Beecher prior to the incident. However, Beecher refused to meet other demands, including one to destroy all the remaining booklets. He said earlier there was "no reason to believe" the individuals involved in the incident "represented AACS or any other organization." Ron Gierhan, student affairs discipline officer, confirmed Beecher's statement Friday. "We have been able to determine that no student organization was involved in the planning or carrying out" of the confrontation, Gierhan said, i Leroy Ramsey, director of minority affairs, had been in I charge of investigating the incident. He indicated he was trying to reach a compromise between j ASUN and AACS over the incident, which probably would ' include mutual letters of apology.
