Varner aide
will promote
cultural events
by Carolyn Hull
University President D.B. Varner, in an
attempt to promote fine arts programs at the
University and across the state, has appointed
Vaughn Jaenike as his special assistant for the
arts.
Jaenike will coordinate information about
cultural events on a state-wide basis. His
position, he said last week, will create a channel
for the University and people of Nebraska to
work through when trying to attract
performing arts groups to the state.
"So much of what goes on in the fine arts at
the University that could be shared with the
rest of the state just has not been shared,"
Jaenike said.
"I see the office as a clearing house for all
that goes on in the performing arts of gathering
information and giving it out again.
I'll be coordinating tours of existing groups
within the state, sharing events among the
campuses and generally keeping lines of
communication open among various groups
throughout the state," Jaenike said.
"My role is as a liaison person to coordinate
University activities with what happens in the
community," Jaenike said.
The office also will assist in securing
financial support for programs.
Jaenike and Varner announced last week
that pianist Grant Johannesen and his wife,
cellist Zara Nelsova, will be giving 20 single and
joint performances across the state during the
next year.
"We're interested in sharing the services of
these distinguished artists with outstate
communities," Jaenike said. They will appear as
a duo in their first four concerts, to be held in
Lincoln and Omaha, he said. Following those
concerts, Jaen&a said hs hopes performances
can be slated in outstate communities.
Jaenike said the Johannesens will be
available occasionally between performances
for seminars and lessons.
He said his office is also trying to attract a
nationally recognized theater group and a
chamber orchestra to Nebraska for short
residencies.
Jaenike's office is being funded with a
one-year grant compiled from both public and
private sources. Consequently, he said, much is
being done to insure that what is accomplished
this year will be able to continue.
"I am working with the idea of making what
I do self-sustaining," he said. "I work with
a concern for self -perpetuation, since the post is
being thought of as temporary."
Upon dissolution of his position, his duties
hopefully will be carried on by groups like the
Mid-America Arts Council and the University's
Cultural Affairs Committee, according to
Jaenike.
"UNL already is ahead of most campuses by
just having a Cultural Affairs Committee
composed of both faculty and students which
compares to a community arts council," he
said.
Also working with Jaenike will be Mrs.
Curtis Kimball, who will coordinate visual arts
for the University.

advising system didn't appear as lacking as she expected it
would.
She said the survey confirmed that the most important
factor in the learning process is not class structure, but the
'Survey results have been routed for evaluation to the
Dean's Executive Committee and all department heads.
George said there is a possibility for follow-up work in
some areas the survey dealt with, but no definite plans have
been made for such work.
