- - -. 4 - 4 - -- Group willtest aid law The Nebraska Commission on Higher Education Aid has decided to initiate a court test of a state law which provides financial aid to students attending private colleges and universities. The law allows students attending private schools to receive grants up to $500 annually to make up the difference in tuition between public and private institutions. Prior to passage of the law, the Nebraska attorney general issued an opinion claiming it would be unconstitutional. As a result of the uncertainly, Vance Rogers, president of Nebraska Wesleyan University, will initiate a legal challenge to determine if the courts agree with the opinion. Wednesday, a law firm retained by the Nebraska Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) suggested the law be tested by filing a request for payment of expenses which the bill allows. Since the vouchers must be channeled through the state treasurer's office, and that office would be expected to be governed by the attorney general's opinion, the expense request will probably be denied. Rogers would then file a suit through the courts, causing a ruling on the constitutionality of the bill. The attorney general's office, because of its earlier opinion, asked it not be used to challenge the law because it would be forced into the position of defending it. The NAICU is the chief advocate of the 1972 measure, designed to help alleviate the financial bind facing many private institutions. Faculty members get fellowships Ten UNL faculty members are recipients of the first "Mid-Career Teaching Fellowships" made possible by a $30,000 Danforth Foundation grant. The University, along with six other institutions in the nation, was awarded the grant last fall to "support centers for improving undergraduate teaching and learning." The 10 faculty chosen are: Larry Braskamp, educational psychology; David Hibler, English; R.O. Hoffman, industrial engineering; Udo Janssen, secondary education; David Kal, architecture; Steve Lewis, education; Donald McCurdy, secondary education; Nelson Potter, pniiosopny; Mivin surKan, computer science.
