    Zumberge
urges shift
in Evan's job
UNL Chancellor James Zumberge has urged the Board of
Regents to reassign agricultural economist Bert Evans to the
city campus department of economics.
Zumberge based his recommendation on a 27-page report
by the academic freedom and tenure committee. The report,
released this summer, was compiled from three days of
hearings last spring on grievances filed by Evans relating to
salary and lack of promotion and tenure.
The committee report recommended that Evans should be
considered for a pay hike, promotion and reassignment.
The report indicated the committee's initial concern was to
pinpoint Evans' specific assignments and duties.
According to the report, the committee failed to find "a
single, well-defined, unambiguous stateement which defined
Professor Evans' duties and responsibilities as a state
specialist."
Testimony during the hearings presented contradicting
views of Evans' assignment.
After comparing Evans' salary with those of other
agricultural economists, the committee concluded that he was
"seriously underpaid.'
The committee also noted that Evans' had a different
perspective on his job than did his supervisors, which may have
caused his lack of promotion.
