About The daily Nebraskan. ([Lincoln, Neb.) 1901-current | View Entire Issue (Sept. 1, 1972)
ft friday? a note to the reader i I ' , J i do S I u JUT FOLD IN. HMF AND. R.E.AD!! You are reading a historical event. With this, the first issue of its friday magazine supplement, the Daily Nebraskan departs from its tradition-worn and limiting newspaper format for the first time, to produce something entirely new and different. In the past there have been a large number of publications on the UNL campus publications that have offered a large variety of formats: yearbooks, pamphlets, manifestos-even magazines. None of them, however has offered the two things which friday intends to make its objectives: 1) to explain, interpret and analyze news in a coherent, colorful manner; and 2) to appeal to the diverse interests of an ever-expanding total University community. To achieve these goals, the Daily Nebraskan has called on its multifaceted staff as well as numerous non staff members to explore and digest the diversity of the Multiversity of Nebraska-Lincoln. In doing so, the staff has planned to hit a number of significant bases in its initial issues. Next week's issue will feature a diverse and fresh look at what you can expect in the way of entertainment this fall at UNL and in Lincoln. Planned for the near future are in-depth reports on such formidable institutions as the University Health Center and the UNL library system. A major part of this fall's coverage will be handled by the Daily Nebraskan sports department, when it takes over friday on home football game weekends. These special sports editions will feature interviews with sports insiders, photos of Husker games, analysis and pre-game speculation as well as full-team and starting lineups, everything a Big Red fan could want in football coverage. For this, friday's history-making premiere issue, Michael (O.J.) Nelson tackles recent and upcoming switches in personnel and policy in the Office of Student Affairs-changes that could ultimately affect every person on the UNL campus. The Daily Nebraskan chose the magazine format for friday because we felt it would help us take a new approach to the news. Depth reporting in magazine style allows friday to explore areas which will make interesting reading for all portions of the University. A continuing, weekly feature of the Daily Nebraskan, friday is a considered, reasoned attempt at making news relevant. A venture in the new journalism. We hope you'll like it. Jim Gray Editor-in-chief
