RAPPING WITH STAN SORENSEN Graduate Student, University of Nebraska QUESTION: Stan, as one of five candidates in the running for the 27th District Unicameral Post, you really have your work cut out for you. With the recent enfranchisement of so many new young voters, most office seekers are nuking special efforts to familiarize themselves with the issues of concern to these young people. Let's discuss a few of these issues as they relate to University students. How do you feel about University budget appropriations and curriculum? STAN: The University does have areas of financial needs. The school could use a complete new computer science setup. The graduate schools do not offer very many classes. There are other shortcomings in staff and physical needs. Some of these shortages could be eliminated by re-organization, e.g., having different areas of specialization at only one state institution. This would result in better utilization of resources and higher quality for less money. One of the greates needs at UNL a more student housing. Housing for married students is almost non-existent. Students must depend on the local Tow-income housing which is inadequate and many times substandard with rents greatly out of line. QUESTION: What do you think about the visitation rights controversy that the last legislature got involved in? STAN: The University should be operated by the people concerned. By that I mean that the question of visitation should be the concern of the students, since they are now, almost without exception, legal age. Any rules they implement should by by the self-determination of the people concerned. It always has been unbelievable to me that the Legislature would expect the faculty to "baby-sit ' adult students. QUESTION: Do you think beer should be sold on campus? STAN: ft doesn't seem to present a problem to have beer for sale in eating establishments on campus. The Europeans have been doing this in their colleges for hundreds of years without any serious problems. QUESTION: How do you feel about the feminist movement? STAN: I'm really happy to see the women working for self-identity and becoming self-determined. A study for day cure is of real importance. The legislature has the responsibility of passing laws for the equal opportunities of not only women, but all minority groups including prisoners. SPrtFl?1 Sun' ' retirei military officer, what do you think of the current situation in Vietnam? , A : unbel, evable that the U.S. would use so many destructive forces against foe and friend alike, since the dropping of these from the air results in a pattern of destruction that is undetermined and uncontrollable. Until we agree to withdraw, our prisoners will not be returned, the killing will continue, and more billions of dollars will be wasted supporting a dictatorial regime. QUESTION: What national candidates do you favor? STAN: I like the looks of McGovern at this time. For the Senate, Wallace Peterson appears to be outstanding. QUESTION: How are your chances, Stan? STAN: WeB, we have fragmentation on our ticket, but I believe I have an excellent chance if everyone will get out and vote. The incumbent represents the 'establishment' and the wealthy patrons who are known to have a high percentage of voter participation. The other voters can scatter their votes between the remaining four or they can vote for the one that has the best chance to win and thereby defeat this arrangement. QUESTION: Do you feel that you Ye the one with the best chance of winning? STAN: I have done extensive advertising against unjust tax legislation that was strongly supported by the incumbent. I do not belong to any special interest group and believe that I have broad support throughout the district. I am mature and am experienced. We need help to give out matches during the tune the polls are open, May 9th. If you can spare a couple hours to help me, please contact Brenden Moore-telephone 475-S259.
