Top pitchers
pose challenge
for Munson
Oklahoma brings the best pitching staff in
the Big Eight Conference to Lincoln this
weekend for a three-game series with Nebraska,
but the ' Huskers' leading hitter is looking
forward to the challenge.
"Oklahoma will definitely be a tough team
to beat and hit against," said Bob Munson, who
leads the Huskers in batting this season with a
.400 average, "Having the best record and
pitching staff in the conference will mean the
team and I are going to have to do our very
best. I'm going to have to depend on my
confidence and concentration even more to get
some hits against them."
Last year Munson 's batting average was .223,
far below his present average. "My hitting has
improved this year mainly because I'm
concentrating more and I'm more patient at the
plate," the Bradford, Vt., junior said.
Besides leading the Huskers in hitting this
season, the Husker right fielder is also leading
the Nebraska regulars in fielding. Out of 102

chances, Munson has committed only one error
for a .990 average.
"Bob is one of the finest college right
fielders in the country," Husker Baseball Coach
Tony Sharpe said. "He gets a good jump on the
ball and most important of all he has a good
baseball sense. His hustle and desire rubs off on
the rest of the team."
Munson credits his prep school, Choate, in
Wallingford, Conn., for his early development.
"I was a pitcher at Choate and we'd pla 40
games a season including a road trip down to
Florida. Choate had a fantastic baseball
program."
His talents in prep school earned Munson
All-New England honors and the option to play
major league baseball for St. Louis.
Munson will be eligible again for the major
-league draft in June. If he has his way about it,
' he'd like to play for the Boston Red Sox.
"Like every baseball player, the major
leagues is my ultimate goal. But I'll just have to
wait and see what happens June 7. Even if I am
. drafted, I wouldn't sign this year. I still have
another year to' play at. Nebraska and another
year of school to get through. But right now
I 'm worried about Oklahoma."
Munson has good reason to worry about
Oklahoma, which leads the Big Eight with a
10-5 record. "We're in last place and they are in
first place," Munson said. 'The team and I are
trying to finish as high as possible in the Big
Eight. I would sure hate to finish down in the
cellar."
Sharpe said the Huskers will have to play
their best in order to win. 'They have a real
good ball club and without a doubt, the best
pitching staff in the conference with Gary
Weese, Jackson Todd and Rick Jacobs," he
noted. "Since Oklahoma is on top of the
conference, they'll have to beat lis this weekend
in order to stay on top. They'll be after us."
Sharpe will start Ryan Kurosaki (2-2),
Dennis O'Doherty (1-2) and either Glen
Gilmore (1-3) or Terry Seymour (1-1) against
the Sooners.
Weather permitting, the Oklahoma series will
be the first games on ths new UNL baseball
field. Friday's doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. and
Saturday's single game begins at 11 a.m. This
will be the last home series for the Huskers this
season.
"For the seniors these will the last games in
front of a Nebraska crowd. I'm sure the seniors
and the rest of the team would love to see the
team's record (5-9) have a few more wins
tacked on after this weekend," Sharpe said.

Spring practice ends
Unless one team switches jerseys at halftime, the No. 1
offense will not meet the No. 1 defense Saturday during the
annual Red-White Game which concludes spring practice for
the Nebraska football team.
The Nebraska coaching staff has decided to put both the
No. 1 offensive and defensive units on the Red team for the
1:30 p.m. game at Memorial Stadium. The No. 4 units will also
be on the Red team while the whites will be composed of the
No. 2 and 3 units.
Coach Bob Devaney said Wednesday one reason he wasn't
matching the No. 1 units aginst each other was to "protect our
quarterbacks a little bit." He also said the match-ups "give us a
little more unity to the teams. If it's like last spring we can
switch the teams at half. But .1 think the match-ups will
entertain the public a little bit more."
Although spring practice is nearly complete, Devaney said
he wasn't certain who will start on the No. 1 teams Saturday.
His main concern was the offense, which he said "hasn't had a
very good spring up to this point."
"Except for Daryl White, Doug Dumler and Jerry List it is a
scramble in the offensive line," he noted.
Defense is a little more settled. Devaney said Bill Janssen
(tackle), JoiVi Dutton (tackle), Willie Harper (end) and Rich
Glover (middle guard) will be defensive line starters when fall
camp opens. y

Former Nebraska running
back Jeff Kinney signed a
contract with the Kansas City
Chiefs Tuesday. Terms of the
contract were not announced.
Kinney, the first round
draft choice of the Chiefs,
signed the contract in the
Kansas City office of Chiefs'
Coach Hank Stram, who
described Kinney as "a winner
who possesses the size, speed
and strength we look for in a
running back. He's also an
outstanding blocker and
receiver, qualities that will
enhance his value to our
football team."
The former Husker star
said, "It is a very good contract
and I'm very happy."
The UNL Trapshooters will
