Maurer urges sexual honesty
"We are just beginning to deal honestly with
sex," said a United Church of Christ minister
and human sexuality consultant to the
University of Minnesota School of Medicine.
"Someday we'll begin to do the same with
the Bible," Tom Maurer said Sunday evening at
the Lincoln Unitarian church.
The church has "cursed sex" Maurer 'charged.
"Sex has been sick for 1,500 years' he said.
Maurer served as field director in the Kinsey
Institute's study of 5,000 homosexuals in the
San Francisco Bay area. Allen Bell, speaker at
the UN L Time-Out Conference on Human
Sexuality last fall was overall director for that
same study.
The basic criticism of homosexuality,
Maurer said, has come from the Bible.
'The theological verbiage has been garbage,"
Maurer said. The three "malefactors of sex" he

Maurer, who has counseled numerous
homosexuals, said the first thing he will tell a
gay person is "don't ever trust a policeman.
"The police departments of most large cities
are incredibly corrupt," Maurer said.
Maurer, indirectly disputing a statement
attributed to NU Regent Robert Prokop, said a
disproportionate number of heterosexuals are
arrested for child molestation.
"All of us are oriented between
homosexuality and heterosexuality. Well, high
water or shock treatment is not going to change
the person," Maurer said.
The "sickness theory" of homosexuality,
Maurer said, came as the result of psychiatrists
realizing their gay patients were in need of
counseling. They neglected to realize their
"straight" patients were also in need of
counseling.
"Each of us is born into this world with a
different hunk of clay," Maurer said, disputing
the often asked question, "What causes
homosexuality?"
The question could just as easily be phrased
Maurer said, "What causes heterosexualtiy?"
Maurer said homosexuals do not want
segregation but rather "fair employment and
promotion." He said an end to police
entrapment was also essential.
"You don't have to approve of a person to
accept them," Maurer said.
He urged society to "stop treating sex as a
sacred cow" but as it is, "a basic human
function."
"Where we are on sex today is about where
Ben Franklin was on electricity when he flew
the kite in a thunderstorm."
Maurer suggested the development of a "new
morality" that disapproved any action that
infringed on another's rights, lead to obsession,
or would force an individual to vio.'at their
conscience.
According to Maurer, Kinsey has placed the
number of homosexuals at 4-6 per .cent of the
nation's population. Mauer said the figure may
actually be 8-12 per cent.
Vfould you share malt liquor with a friend?
Sure. Now there's no question about it. Because now malt liquor has a good
name. BUDWEISER. BUDWEISER Malt Liquor is 100-malt, malt liquor (no
other grains are added). This makes BUDWEISER the first malt liquor
that really is . . . malt liquor.

iron curtain closes desk
The Nebraska Union main desk will be closed until at least
Thursday night according to Union Assistant Director Daryl
Swanson and Operation s Manager Frank Kuhn. The two said
the shaft which raises the 1,000 pound gate has been sheared
and might take some time to replace.
Kuhn said the functions of the main desk are being carried
out by the "mini-desk" in the south Crib. He said checks can
be cashed and postage and newspapers purchased at the new
location. Candy and cigarettes can be purchased from the
vending machines in the south crib, he added.
