CSL urges "sufficient housing"
After meeting with members of the Poorhouse Coalition
last week, the Council on Student Life Tuesday passed a
resolution urging the University to take immediate steps, to
secure "sufficient and appropriate housing" for married
students.
' Although the resolution said the University should
recognize its responsiblitiy to house its si note and married
students, the Council decided to place a priority on married
student housing.
Its "unrealistic to think the University will pursue funding
and construction plans for single student housing" at this time,
said CSL member Ely Meyerson, Interim Executive Dean of
Student Affairs.
He said it wouldn't be feasible to renovate dormitories to
house married students since the dorm occupancy rate is 91
per cent. This would only reduce the amount of single student
housing available, he added. .
The resolution states that the University should explore
economic alternatives for financing married student housing
and methods to make the housing more attractive and should
procede with construction at the earliest opportunity.'
An amendment. which would have set a target date of Jan.
1, 1973, for 50 new married student housing units and Aug.
15, 1973, for an additional 50 failed to pass.
Objections to the amendment were that CSL doesn't have
enough facts to set such dates and that construction may not
be feasible in the time allowed.
It's doubtful that the University would begin construction
before the Regents Housing Committee study is completed,
Meyerson said. The committee has applied to the federal office
of Housing and Urban Development for a grant.

Lamb announces
write-in candidacy
Phil Lamb, current College of Agriculture
ASUN senator who declared earlier he would
not run for re-election, announced his write-in
candidacy for ASUN president, Monday.
Lamb said he originally thought most of the
candidates would do a "decent job" as ASUN
executives but was disappointed with the
orientation of the major candidates' platforms.
"Both Baldwin and Beecher have stressed
student services."
First priority should be given to the
improvement of the classroom and the total
academic environment, he said.
"I came to UNL to receive an academic
education not to join a co-op or to buy cheap
gasoline."
. One of the primary efforts for educational
reform should be student evaluation of faculty.
Lamb said. Students are frustrated because they
do not have much imput to the academic
community, he noted.
Lamb also stressed the necessity of
improving the attitude of outstate Nebraskans
toward the University. He said the University
needs to improve its public image and gain a
more positive public attitude toward higher
education.
Legislative bills currently pending in the
Unicameral and the concerns of the regents are
evidence of the need to improve people's
attitudes, he added.
Students are disillusioned with the
candidates parties, according to Lamb. Parties
are used to get people elected rather than as
committments to long term goals, he
complained.
Lamb said he only has an "outside chance of
winning" but hoped he would draw enough
votes to encourage ASUN to give more
consideration to educational reform. A write-in
vote should have more significance than a
regular vote, he said.
