doily (fi:rgfeifi) lorry Robert v. A must tor any big band jazz freak is Buddy Rich's new album. A Different Drummer, on his new RCA label. Rich has been around for ages, but bade in 19SS be farmed bis current big band, in a period of music when everyone said he was crazy. Crazy Idee a fox. . since then, Rich and his band have been extremely successful Riding high on the attention of the youth market. R ich's band is one of the top jazz big bands operating today . And the mrrvekws part of it ai b that Rich hasn't had to sacrifice any of his mcsical ethics to bt accepted. He's st3l the world's greatest drummer. And his latest sHwm. is very possibly the best be and his band have ever recorded. Every cut on the alburn is a del ight, with the band coming across with a heavy driving spirit that readhes out of the record grooves to grab hold of your ears. Superstar" and "Heaven on Their Minds'" from the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar are good strong cuts. Tmmpeter Linn Brviano does some unbelievable high note screeching on '"Superstar," bringing the song to an orgasmic climax. And Pat LaSarbera hits you with a soprano sax solo on "Heaven on Their Minds' that leaves you asking for more of the same. "Tart's Tune" has LaSarbera back again, onh this time on tenor. The band geneiaies a great ensemble feeling on this song, with Rich cutting loose with a dram solo that would part Ginger Baker. fZW'm Jones and KSax Roach afl to shame. Thelonious Monk's "Straight, No Chaser" is a together number with Jeff Stout doing some swinging trumpet work. "Domino" and ""Chelsea Bridge are nice cuts with LaSarbera doing fine tenor work on the former, and aTtoist Jimmy Mosher following suit on "Chelsea Bridge." "A Piece of the Road Suite including Tpe Dreams."" "Courrtin' Them Long White Lines,"' ""A Piece of the Road and "Sack of the Bus" close out the a lbum. The unity of Ate band on this cot is awe inspiring. Praise again going to Bkriano. LsBarbera and Mosher. with baritonist Joe Calo giving a rousing sole cm "Back of the Bus" and a beautiful mraical statement by pianist Bob Peterson on TA Piece of the Road." As for Rich himself, he's stifl as good as he ever was. On this album, he's a little more restrained in his solo work than on previous rocords-but it's an for the better, since the band as a Whole now seems to have more confidence in themselves instead of relying on Rich to carry them through. What more can I sayTHear the album and dig it! How would you like to spend Easter in the Caribbean with people like Rod Stewart and Faces, Emerson, Lake and Palmer and Alice Cooper?
