Can O' Beans -better' n a plate of limas . . . n I ( VK ( N.' 1V . : ' li Its. i" by Michael (O.J.) Nelson "When people read it they sometimes throw up," said Greg Scott. "Or pull down their pants," said Bart Becker. Becker and Scott were talking about a new Lincoln underground comic. "Lincoln's only comic," they said. Can o Beans. The comic was produced by Becker, Scott, Doug Scott, Shelley Thornton and Dave Brink. "We're only in it for the money," sa id Thornton . But Brink said it was more than that. 'The basic idea is fun. C O' B is the campus, prankster' he said. "Originally we thought of it because the campus is in a doldrum. Nobody has any fun anymore." He said the campus is "stoned and miserable" and Can 0' Beans is trying to put "fun back into the students' life." The first edition appeared last Saturday and is selling well, they said. More issues are planned. The comic featured a history of beans, a sing-a-long in which the reader follows the bouncing bean through "Beans, Beans, the Musical Fruit" and cartoons starring Bury Pilfer and Snappy Sammy the Slick Sedan. "In our ' next issuer we're going to shift the emphasis from beans to dirty sox and cuckoo clocks," said Thornton. Greg Scott said the magazine will move toward an intellectual satirical style. An interview with Buckminster Fuller in the first edition is an example of things to come, he said. He said the Can 0' Beans reporter met Fuller when he (Fuller) was selling brushes door-to-door. ' Phone (402) 477-3506 A . PA - t J -I ft l Doug Scott said the staff is watching the "big national magazines" to find out what will sell. "We want to give the public what it wants. "And we're also trying to impress Frank Zappa," he said. The first printing had one incongruity: letters to the editor. "They arrived in a plain 7 (I; -. He added the editorial staff reserves the right to alter the intent of any letter sent in. The five emphasized that Can O' Beans is not a capitalistic venture. "We don't want to rip-off the folks that buy the comic," said Becker. "We're charging only 15 cents and if we make any money it will go into producing the next issue." "Right now we accept advertising, but only from people like us--people who won't steal you blind," he added. They said the first priority in subsequent issues is to increase the number of pages. With a large number of pages they said they will begin to use color and a slick cover. The important thing, they stressed, is that if the comic sells, the profits can be put back into its production. Greg Scott said the staff is going to hire 10 lawyers to clip and file newspaper articles about the comic. Can O' Beans currently employs a European correspondent and a Lincoln correspondent in order to "put the capital city on the map," said Becker. "We also have a part-time employe in Des Moines," added Doug Scott, "he doubles with Readers' Digest." He said the comic has been endorsed by one national political figure. "John Sinclair, founder of the White Panther Party, has said it's "okay" and has made it mandatory reading for party members." He said Lincoln members of the party can buy the comic at The General Store, the ASUN Record Shop or Dirt Cheap. "You can also get them from us in the student union, until the management finds out," he said. 95 "THE SPIRIT Thursday fTY" March 16 7:30 Union FROM THE STUDIO THAT GAVE TOU TRASH " Lrr Cl - A V , ' t I SMI ' '1 H II EASTllAMCOLORiX ilMKKHJ WITH --"-- ..
