Democrates and Republicans appear to have filed
in record numbers for posts on the delegations to
county and national political conventions scheduled
this summer. Oelegate selection will be made at the
May 9 state-wide primary election.
Up for grabs on the Democratic state primary
ballot are 22 delegate seats to that party's national
convention in Miami, Fia. Eight will be selected from
the First Congressional District, eight from the
second, and six from the third.
Almost 300 individuals filed for those 22 positions
with most making the attempt uncommited to any
presidential candidate.
On the Republican side, 16 delegates will be
attending the party's convention in San Diego, Calif.
Six will be elected from the First Congressional
District, four from the second, and six from the third.
With the final tally now in from the Nebraska,
secretary of state's office, the following is the
delegate break-down:

A surprising number of voters filed for delegate to
the county party conventions in Lancaster County.
Final figures released by the Lancaster County
Election Commissioner's office showed 732
Republicans will be on the primary ballot for 747
convention seats.
On the Democratic side, 446 names will be on the
ballot for 1,843 delegate spots.
County delegates are elected by precinct with each
precinct getting a proportionate number of seats with
regard to its total party registration. Therefore, not
all the delegates who filed may get elected as some
precincts could have a contest.
This year's county delegate total far surpasses the
number in the 1968 and 1970 primaries.
In 1968, 391 Democrats filed while 247
Republicans were on the ballot. In 1970, 226
Democrats and 392 Republicans were on the county
ballot.
The greater . number of Democrats in 1968 has
been attributed to the heavily contested Democratic
presidential preference on the ballot. The larger
Republican showing in 1970 could reflect strong
competition in the gubernatorial selection.
Many Democratic presidential campaign groups
had urged their supporters to file as delegates,
possibly accounting for that increase.
Allen Beermann, Nebraska secretary of state, has
announced he will hold a public hearing on the
question of Otis Glebe's eligibility to appear on the
Republican primary ballot.
Moments after Glebe filed for the U.S. Senate,
Lincolnite Wilma .Street presented papers contesting
Glebe's eligibility to be on the ballot.
Street contended that an Otis Orrick Glebe was
found guilty of a felony charge of evading the draft
during World War II. In her statement she said his
civil rights have never been restored which would
deny him the right to vote and hold office.
Beermann set the hearing for Thursday at 3 p.m.
in the East Lounge Hearing Room. He said he hopes
to make a decision as soon as possible so the May 9
primary ballot can be completed.
