GSA stud ies grad uate student issues ASUN cannot aeal with the problems UN L graduate students face, according to Linda Miles, chairman of the Executive Committee of the Graduate Student Association (GSA). Miles said the reason is obvious. "We have different problems than undergraduates," she said. "We're more worried about academics. We're interested in human rights and other issues, but our main concern is getting a degree." Because of this concern for academics, GSA confines itself to working within the graduate college, she said. The group would like to help raise issues and hear individual and group appeals from students who feel they have been treated unfairly. 'That doesn't mean we will help the student automatically. We would like to hear each case and judge them on their individual merits," she said. GSA is currently interceding on the behalf of a student wjth such a casexsaid Miles. 1 if "While helping this student we discovered that the collase hasn't fully defined the grounds for termination," she said. "GSA would like to help the graduate faculty establish flexible procedure which could be used by all departments for such cases." But progress cannot be made without support, she said, and most graduate students don't know the organization exists. "Participation has been our biggest problem," she said. "Many first year students don't know about GSA, and during their second year they don't care." Graduate students know they have problems, but they're afraid to speak out, she said. The students are Just fearful of reprisals. They don't realize that if they speak as group the University will listen." The faculty will be willing to cooperate if they know what graduate student concerns are, she said. To discover these concerns, GSA is planning to conduct a survey of .ail UNL grad students.
