doily (nifegte(n) LU Gip: frosh stars wouldn't start by Gary Sea crest - Kent Reckewey and Jim Goodrich were high school basketball stars last year before coming to UNL. Reckewey averaged 28 points per game last season to lead his , Lincoln East team to its first state high school basketball title and Goodrich (a Madrid, Iowa native) average 38 points per game to set a new Iowa high school record last year. Despite their talent, Husker Basketball Coach Joe Cipriano noted that neither of the two freshmen guards would have seen much action on the varsity if a recent NCAA decision to allow freshmen to compete on varsity football and basketball teams had been in effect for the current freshmen class. In fact, Cipriano said, "I don't think we've had any freshmen that could have stepped in and started." Both Reckewey and Goodrich agree with Cipriano. "I might have made the squad, but I wouldn't have played," Reckewey said. "Before I came here I thought I could make the varsity if freshmen were eligible," Goodrich noted. "But I found I really needed a year on the freshman team to get adjusted to school and basketball." Reckewey, who has helped the freshmen team to a 9-2 record with his team-leading 19.4 scoring average, has doubts about freshmen being eligible in basketball. "If a kid is really that good he should be able to play on the varsity. But in the long run it's better to get adjusted to college life and basketball on the freshman team. I don't think a freshman is emotionally ready and you're just exploiting him by playing him on the varsity." The Lincoln native speculated the NCAA made freshmen eligible to help the weaker teams and to save money on scholarships. . Goodrich has been bothered this season by a shooting slump which has limited his scoring average to 12.5 points per game. "I'm disappointed in my play," Goodrich said. "Part of my problem stems from having to get used to the system here." Cipriano said it would be even difficult for Reckewey and Goodrich to break into the starting line-up next year as sophomores. "If they want to break into the starting line-up they're going to have to work hard over the summer," he said. Despite the new freshman eligibility rule, Cipriano said Nebraska would continue to have a freshman basketball program. However, the Husker coach plans to use the rule to his advantage in recruiting by telling top players they have a chance to play four years on the varsity at Nebraska. "We're after a couple of high school players who could play varsity next season, but it is hard to say if they will come here," he said. While the Big Eight has agreed to go along with the freshman eligibility rule, there has been a lot of opposition in the conference against the new rule. UNL Athletic Director Bob Devaney said the new rule puts "too much of a burden" on freshmen. "I think it's a bad rule," he said. "I can't see how it's going to benefit anyone." Many college coaches see the freshman rule as another symptom of the economic squeeze in intercollegiate athletics. Allowing freshmen to compete on the varsity means that schools can have the same number of varsity players while reducing the total number of scholarships given. Thus a college . can get a 33 .3 per cent greater return on its investment in each athlete since the athlete now has four years of eligibility, instead of three.- 1 A W v winner of seven academy awards SPECIAL SHOWING TIMES Thur.
