Huskers romp,
remain in race
by Gary Seacrest
The date was Feb. 26, 1966, and Kansas,
playing at home, had just run up the score in
recording a 110-73 victory over Nebraska.
After the game Husker Coach Joe Cipriano
told Kansas Coach Ted Owens "the day
would come" when Cipriano would get
revenge.
Saturday night before a capacity crowd at
the Coliseum, Cipriano got his revenge as the
Huskers eliminated the defending Big Eight
champion from the 1972 title race with a
99-78 victory.
The Huskers, in recording a rare win
against Kansas, played a near perfect game as
they out-hustled, out-shot, and
out-rebounded the Jayhawks. Perhaps the
only Husker flaw came when they tried to
run up the score in the final minutes to the
delight of the Coliseum crowd.
The Huskers tried frantically to hit the
100 mark, something that no Big Eight team
had accomplished against Kansas. But the
Jayhawks managed to avoid the
embarrassment by stalling in the last two
and one half minutes. Despite the rout (the
Huskers led by as much as 27 in the second
half), Cipriano did not clear his bench and
played starters Chuck Jura and Al Nissen in
the final minutes in an attempt to score 100
points.
"I'm sorry we didn't get 100," Cipriano
said after the game.
Cipriano had no qualms about running up
the score against the hapless Jayhawks. "It
was one of my most .gratifying wins. I've
turned over a lot of nights since we got beat
110-73 in 1966." he said.
"Cip really wanted to stick it to them,"
Husker guard Al Nissen said. "Its always
good to beat KU."
Saturday's romp broke a Nebraska
five-game losing streak to Kansas and kept
the Huskers in third place in the conference
with a 7-3 record.
"It was a good comeback after getting
beat by Missouri," Cipriano said. "I thought,
we moved the ball well offensively and got
up the court well. We may have caught them
a little by surprise."
The Huskers' 99-point performance was
the team's largest offensive output of the
season and represented the most points ever
scored by a Big Eight foe against, the
Jayhawks.
About the only thing the Huskers
couldn't do against Kansas was score 100
points. The Huskers shot 58 per cent from
the field and out-rebounded the smaller
Jayhawks 57-35. The Huskers' balanced
attack was led by Mike Peterson's 18 points,
Nissen's 20 points and Jura's 33 points and
18 rebounds.
Jura explained the reason behind the
Huskers' offensive explosion against Kansas.
"Kansas couldn't concentrate on any one
thing," he said. "We had terrific balance in
our offensive. When we're hitting from
outside it opens the middle." '
The 6-10 center said the Huskers, whose
next game is at Colorado Saturday, are going
to need more performances like the one
against Kansas. "If we are going to be a title
contender we're going to have to put it all
together every game."
Husker thinclads extend winning streak
The Nebraska indoor track team, which
hasn't lost a dual meet since 1968, easily
kept their winning streak intact Saturday as
they crushed Iowa State 109-22 in their dual
meet at Memorial Stadium.
"The times were really surprising
considering we did strength work all week,"
said Nebraska's Jim Hawkins, who broke a
Memorial Stadium record in the 1,000 yard
run in a time of 2:13.1.
"We didn't sharpen up for this meet
because we were pointing to Wisconsin next
week and the Big Eight indoor meet the
week after that," Hawkins said. Next
Saturday the Huskers will be at home to face
Wisconsin, the defending Big Ten champ.
' . Besides Hawkins' stadium record, there
were six other Cornhuskers who either broke
or tied a meet record against the Cyclones.
Meet record performances came from Dan
Speck, 4: 1 1 .1 in the mile; Hopeton Gordon,
24-3 in the long jump; Leighton Priestly
:49.7 in the 440; and Bob Unger, 9:07.6 in
the two-mile.

The Coliseum crowd yells, "Go. Go. Go." But this time the
cheers are not for the Nebraska basketball team, but for Harry
Burns and Art Songer, the dynamic duo who sweep the
Coliseum court during the games.
For 10 years these two men have been competing for the
honor of being the fastest court sweeper at Nebraska.
Who has won the most races; According to Burns, he is
leading the competition. "I've won most of the contests over
the past 10 years because I have longer legs than Art. But he
gets lucky once in a while and beats me."
In any type of competition there is strategy
involved-including sweeping. "My strategy is simple," Burns
explained. "J just make my legs go faster than Art's. The only
time I lose is when people get in my way. I don't mind it
though, when those pretty cheerleaders get in my way. They
would slow anybody down."
Songer doesn't mind being the underdog to Burns. "The
crowd likes it when Harry wins." said Songer, "So I let him

win most of the time. But sometimes I'll let Harry get out in
front of me, then I'll run up from behind him and finish ahead
of him."
Most people don't appreciate the important role these two
men play in the Husker's success according to Songer. "We get
the crowd all excited with our race, so when Nebraska comes
on the court the fans are already yelling," he noted. "It's quite
exciting for us and the fans, while at the same time it helps the
team."
Basketball players come and go at Nebraska. But Harry
Burns and Art Songer remain to entertain and charm the
Husker crowd.
