Hot-handed Huskers retain lead by Gary Seacrest When a basketball team shoots 69 per cent from the field you can expect a lopsided game. But such wasn't the case. Saturday at the Coliseum when Nebraska got a hot hand. "We never blow anybody off the court," Nebraska guard Al Nissen said following the Huskers' 76-71 victory over Iowa State. Despite the Husker's spectacular shooting Unger smashes two-mile record HOUSTON, TEX.-Nebraska won two track events and was second in another in the national Astrodome Championship indoor track meet Saturday. The big surprise of the day came when Bob Unger ran the fastest two-mile race ever run by a Cornhusker, winning the event with a time of 8:41.4. His time bettered by almost 19 seconds the Nebraska indoor record of 9:00.2 set last year by Greg Carlberg. Nebraska's other victory came with Leighton Priestly, Larry Cimato, Wes Leonard and Garth Case running the mile relay in 3:07.5. The Cornhusker's other foursome of Jeff Wisemiller, Roger Chadwick, Dan Speck and Jim Hawkins finished second in the two-mile relay behind world record holder Illinois. Southern California won the meet, but the Huskers tied for second with Wisconsin. (they shot better from the field than the foul line and hit 14 of 16 shots from the field during the second half), the Huskers needed a comeback in the final two minutes of the second half to take a 38-36 halftime lead they never lost. Nebraska's string of close games will probably continue when the Huskers play Missouri Tuesday night at Brewer Field House in Columbia. Both teams enter the 7:35 contest tied for first place in the Big Eight race with 6-2 records. Despite the fact that the Tigers have won 40 out of their last 43 home games, the Huskers think they have a good chance to gain sole possession of first place. "We should beat them," center Chuck Jura said. "I don't think it's impossible to win there," Head Coach Joe Cipriano noted. "We've been playing well on the road. We've just got to make our minds up we can get the job done. We have to be thinking we can be champions." Missouri and Nebraska have played once this season with the Tigers winning 74-67 in the opening round of the Big Eight tournament in December. Tuesday's rematch should produce a duel between two of the league's top scorers and rebounders the 6-10 Jura and the Tigers' 6-7 John Brown. Both played on the U.S. Olympic Development team last summer. But the key to the Huskers' success will not be one individual, according to Cipriano. "To do well we have to play together as a team." In the fraternity league, Alpha Tau Omega (4-0) looks like the team to beat. But the winner of Alpha Gama Rho (5-0) vs. Sigma Chi (4-1) or Pioneers (4-0) vs. Phi Kappa Psi (4-1) could give the ATO's a tough run for the championship. Gooding (6-0) and Patton (5-0) should make it to the finals with Gooding being the winner of the dorm league competition. But if Schramm X (5-0) can get past Schramm IV (6-1) this week, they could be the team that goes all the way. The independent championship is up for grabs. With five teams still undefeated it could be anybody's ball game. But if the Kerngers (7-0) continue to play as well as they have in the past, they should be able to come out of the tournament still undefeated. But watch out, the sleeper in this league could be the Celtics (6-1). Here are this week's top "A" intramural teams. Fraternities 1. Alpha Tau Omege (4-0) 2. Alpha Gamma Rho (5-0) 3. Torts (6 0) The Nebraska wrestlers recorded their third straight winning season and best season in a decade when they defeated Northwest Missouri 20-11 at Maryville Saturday. The Huskers lost only three matches against Northwest Missouri to finish their dual season with a 9-5-1 record. The Huskers will travel to Stillwater, Okla., in two weeks to compete in the Big Eight championships. Nebraska gymnasts won lust place in every event Saturday to crush Colorado 152.45-122.95 in their dual meet. The Huskers, bouncing back f rom last week's defeat to defending NCAA champion Iowa State, were able to place 1-2-3 in all the events except the long horse against Colorado. Hoppy Batten, John Kocourek and Gene Mackie were all double winners for the Cornhuskers. The Nebraska freshmen basketball team hiked its season record to 7-2 by defeating Iowa State 77-67 at the Coliseum Saturday. Nebraska got 42 points from their guards Jim Goodrich and Kent Reckewey and a 16 rebound performance by Don Jackson to gain a split with the young Cyclones. Last week the Husker freshmen lost to Iowa State 61-47 at Ames. Running back Jeff Kinney has been named the winner of the Guy Chamberlin Trophy as the Nebraska football senior best typifying the spirit of the former Husker Ail-American. ...
