- . . Looking olass bervice combats drug abuse The Looking Glass Crisis Service is to drug abusers as Alcoholics Anonymous is to chronic drunks, said Mike Hayes, spokesman for the drug crisis center. Hayes, like all 30 Looking Glass counselors, is a former drug user. The eight-month old non-profit organization will operate a drop-in center and crisis intervention telephone service with the hope of reaching people on a store-front level, Hayes reported. "We have many ideas and plans, but they are not finalized yet." The service seeks honest, straightforward and truthful approaches to drug problems in Lincoln, Hayes said. "Drug problems aren't as bad in Lincoln as big cities, but it is serious enough to pay attention to," he remarked. "We need to provide an environment congruent to self-help." Currently Looking Glass is being restructured. Originally, the program was devised by a Lincoln Action Program committee in 1971. Their study concluded that a treatment program run by former drug users would be effective. Looking Glass initiated group sessions twice weekly at the Lincoln Regional Center and Veterans Administration Hospital to help patients with drug problems. The group also sponsored the now defunct University Crash Pad, which assisted UNL students with drug problems. Looking Glass is an independent organization operating with the support of the Lincoln Sertoma Club and the Lincoln Jaycees. "We are attempting to better coordinate with other community resources, such as the Personal Crisis Service," Hayes said. Looking Glass is seeking mature, responsible volunteers to cope adequately with the drug crisis, according to Hayes. A goal of 40 competent therapists is set for next fall. A training program is scheduled for March, including lectures in drug pharmacology by Ed Roche, associate professor of pharmacy at UNL. Volunteers would serve on a trial basis to see if they were capable, Hayes said. "Looking Glass has much potential for volunteers to become involved," he added. stuff "Sky Watch 72" is now showing at the Mueller Planetarium in the University of Nebraska State Museum at 2:30 and 3:45 Sundays and 2:45 Saturdays.
