NisserTs late heroics
by Gary Seacrest
Nebraska performed
"Mission Impossible" Tuesday
night before a capacity crowd
at the Coliseum as they
overcame a 12-point deficit in
the second half to edge Kansas
State 61-60.
Al Nissen's jump shot from
the top of the key with 13
seconds left provided the
winning margin. Nebraska's
win, coupled with Missouri's
64-60 victory over Kansas at
Columbia Tuesday night,
pushed the Huskers back into
first place in the Big Eight
Conference with a 5-1 record.
Nebraska, playing a
lackluster first half and early
second half, trailed the
Wildcats by 12 points, 51-39
with 10:45 left in the game.
However, NU center Chuck
Jura, who lead all scorers with
29 points, hit on a three-point
play 13 seconds later to cut the
Freshmen round bailers win too
Inspite of 26 turnovers in
the second half, the Nebraska
Freshman basketball team
managed to hold back Kansas
State Tuesday night. 72-62.
The Cornhuskers' mistakes,
however, did not effect their
shooting. From the field, the
Huskers made a sizzling 63 per
cent of their shots and 80 per
cent of their conversions from
the charity stripe.
The Huskers led 35-24 at
half time. But with 5:58
remaining in the game, Kansas
State's Steve Snider put the
Wildcats within 6 points of the
Huskers. 59 53.
But the Huskers extended
their lead to 10 points on
baskets by Kent Reckeway and
Jud Martin. The Wildcats then
came back quickly on a score
making it a 63-55 contest. But
the next time down the court.

lead to nine. From then on it
was all Nebraska as the
Huskers, led by reserve Lee
Harris, effectively employed a
full-court press that produced
numerous Kansas turnovers.
NU Coach Joe Cipriano
credited Harris for sparking the
Husker's second half rally.
"Lee Harris got our defense
going and he gave us the
momentum we needed to
win," Cipriano said.
The Nebraska pressure
defense had whittled the
Kansas State lead down to
three when Wildcat David
Hall traveled with 2:24 to go.
Jura Came back with a basket
24 seconds later to cut the
margin to one.
After Kansas State regained
a three-point lead with two
free throws by Lon Kruger,
Nebraska again went with Jura.
The A II-American candidate
responded by scoring a basket
Nebraska's Don Johnson
converted on a three-point
play, putting the game out of
reach of Kansas State.

with 58 seconds remaining to
reduce the Wildcat lead to
one again.
Moments later Nissen fouled
Ernie Kusnyer after Kansas
State began to stall. Kusnyer,
who lead his team in scoring
with 18 points, missed the first
shot of a one-on-one and the
Huskers grabbed the rebound.
After the missed free throw,
Nissen hit his game-winning
jump shot to give the Huskers
their 12th win of the season.
Kansas State led 36-30 at
half-time as Nebraska shot only
37 per cent from the field. The
Huskers recovered somewhat in
the second half and finished
the game with a 43 per cent
field goal average.
Cipriano credited the
Huskers' foul shooting, 13 of
17, for "saving the game."
