The agony of defeat.
Nebraska guard Al Nissen laid prostrate
on the floor of Kansas' Allen Field House in
utter disbelief. He watched as Jayhawk fans
lifted Kansas reserve Fred Bosilevac to their
shoulders for a victory ride.
Kansas had just beaten Nebraska in the
final two seconds of overtime when
Bosilevac stole an inbounds pass from
Husker forward Mike Peterson and dribbled
in for the winning lay-up. The loss,
Nebraska's tenth straight at Lawrence,
enabled Kansas to grab a share of the Big
Eight lead with the Huskers. Both teams
now have 4-1 conference records.
"This was the toughest loss that I've had
since I've been here," Nebraska Coach Joe
Cipriano said Sunday of the Kansas game.
But he said that Saturday's heart-breaking
loss did not seriously hurt the Huskers'
chances of winning the Big Eight title. "If
you win at home and split on the road,
you'll be in the thick of it. So we're not out
of it yet."
Until the last three minutes in regulation
of the Kansas game, the Huskers played
about as well as they could, according to
Cipriano. He was especially pleased with the
play of Nissen, who scored 16 points and

running events except
hurdles to defeat Indiana, Big
Ten outdoor champions for the
last two years, 80-60 at
Bloomington Saturday.
The Huskers, in capturing
their dual opener, got winning
efforts in the track events from
Horace Levy in the 60, Doug
Gregory in the 300, Leighton
Priestley in the 440, Jeff
Wisemiller in the 880, Dan
Speck in the 1,000-yard run,
Jim Hawkins in the mile and
Bob linger in the two-mile.
Nebraska wrestlers Bob
Orta, Ralph Manning and Joe
George were triple winners
Friday to lead the Huskers to
dual meet wins over Missouri,
Kansas State and Minnesota in
a quadrangular meet Friday at
the Colisuem.
Former Lincoln High
swimmers Spencer Luedke and
fans) led 55-51 with 3:43 left in regulation
play. However, the Jayhawks, with the aid
of a Husker turnover, scored two quick
baskets to tie the score with 1:59 to go.
Nebraska elected to run down the clock for
a final shot, but Peterson's jump shot from
the foul line with five seconds left was long.
Kansas controlled the tip to start the
overtime and immediately began to run the
clock out. After a missed free throw by
Kansas' Aubrey Nash with 3:12 left in the
overtime, the Huskers' got the rebound and
began stalling for a final shot. However,
Nebraska was forced into a jump ball with
just eight seconds left when Nissen took too
much time on his ball-controlling dribbling.
The veteran NU guard was matched with
Nash who controlled the tip to teammate
Randy Canfield. The KU center scored a
quick basket, but was called for travelling.
The Cornhuskers had the ball
out-of-bounds with two seconds remaining,
but lightening then struck in the form of
Bosilevac.
Can Nebraska come back against Kansas
State Tuesday night at the Coliseum?
"The seniors really took the loss tough,"
Cipriano noted. "But they'll bounce back."
Kansas State enters the 7:35 p.m. game
with a 3-1 conference record after beating
Oklahoma 70-58 at Manhattan Saturday
night.
"They (Kansas State) have the tallest
team in the league," Cipriano said. 'They
have been playing a lot of sophomores,
which should help us. They have also been
hot and cold: if their guards are hot then
they'll be hard to stop." J

However, the Husker
swimmers won only two events
Saturday as they lost to Iowa
State 70-42 at Ames.

Who has the hottest men's intramural basketball team
this year at the University? That question can't be answered
with certainty until the conclusion of the Men's Intramural
Basketball Tournament next month. But until the
championship team is decided, the Daily Nebraskan will be
rating the top five teams among the fraternities, dorms and
independents throughout the rest of the season and the
tournament.

Open swimming in the Abel-Sandoz Pool will now be
provided by the Recreation and Intramural Department (R
and I) for all students, faculty and staff members. The
times for these swims will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7
p.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. The cost will be 25
cents per swim or $1 per month or $4 per semester.
Showers and lockers will be available for both men and
women.
R and I will be sponsoring co-rec volleyball (three men
and three women) for undergraduate students. Entries are
due no later than Feb. 2 at the R and I office. There will
also be a co-rec volleyball tournament which will be open
to faculty, graduate students and employees. Entry
deadline for this tournament is Feb. 8.

Independent study system, NFU must hold registration for all

All-Stars, Nixon
invite Big Red
The nation's number one football fan will
honor representatives of the nation's number
one college football team Tuesday.
President Nixon has invited Coach Bob
Devaney, President D.B. Varner and seven
Nebraska football players to the White
House Tuesday, Sen. Carl Curtis announced
Saturday.
The players invited to attend are
co-captains Jerry Tagge and Jim Anderson
and five players who received national
honors Johnny Rodgers, Rich Glover, Willie
Harper, Larry Jacobson and Jeff Kinney.
Devaney received another honor Saturday
when he was named to coach the College
All-Stars against the Super Bowl champion
Dallas Cowboys in the annual Chicago
Tribune-sponsored game which will be held
July 28 at the Windy City's Soldier Field.
The Nebraska coach is only the second
college coach in two decades to be handed
the coaching assignment for the All-Stars.
Devaney will not have an easy task since the
All-Stars haven't beaten the pro champions
since 1963 when the Green Bay Packers
were defeated 20-1 7.
"This is a tremendous honor," Devaney
said of his appointment. "We will certainly
look forward to playing the Dallas Cowboys
and we realize what a challenge the All-Stars
will face but we'll approach the game with
the idea of winning it."
