Hansen stresses NU unity
Competition, rather than rivalry, between UNO and UNL is
healthy, Omaha Regent Kermit Hansen said Wednesday night. "
"It is important for a Regent to think of the University as a ,
system rather than three separate campuses," Hansen told a
meeting of Sigma Delta Chi professional journalistic society
The campuses should operate as a unified system, he said.
"I think there's got to be uniformity, but I don't read
uniformity as unanimity," he said.
The UNL and UNO campuses are entirely different, Hansen
said. UNO is an urban university, and is commuter rather than
residential oriented, with a different student mix.
"It must serve a population element, the non-white, to a
greater degree than the other campuses might," he said. "UNO
has the potential of becoming a good if not great urban
. university, but this would mean putting emphasis on areas not
available to the Lincoln campus.
Lincoln Regent Ed Schwartzkopf, scheduled to discuss the
relationship between the campuses, was unable to attend the
meeting.
Hansen favors a broad approach in University planning. It
makes sense, he said, to make one discipline first class on one
campus and dilute it on another.
"You reinforce your strengths by not trying to do
everything the same."
UNO is strong in the areas of urban affairs, history and
education, Hansen said.
The Omaha banker expressed dissatisfaction with the
Regents' present relationship with their Student Advisory
Board. Contact with the students is too infrequent, he said,
and suggested establishing monthly meetings.
A viable, honest relationship with the .Advisory Board would
be better than having a student Regent, he said.
"I see more problems than clear value in having a student as
a Regent'Hansen said. Questions of eligibility, length of term
and representation would be difficult to decide, he said.
