Center sets 'Pill' policy Contraceptives at the UNL Student Health Center will now be prescribed only to "married students and those planning to be married," the center's medical director said Wednesday. Calling the statement a "clarification of policy," Dr. Samuel I. Fuenning said it represented little change in procedure. Within the last two weeks the medical staff decided to approve this policy recommended by a special study committee, according to Fuenning. The committee, which consisted mainly of Lincoln physicians who work part-time at the center, was established last fall. It studies the question of whether the center was open to civil and criminal liability for prescribing contraceptives to minors without parental consent. The question is touchy, Fuenning said. Many people, especially those in outstate Nebraska, feel that treating minors is "promoting promiscuity," he added. Some students may have misunderstood the center's policy, he said, but "we have never prescribed medication on demand." Fuennmg said the decision will be used as a guideline for each individual physician. "The doctor still has the responsibility," he said. doily editor-in-chief managing editor news editor ad manager coordinator barry pilger Jim gray bart hecker bill carver jerri baussler The Daily Nebraskan is written, edited and managed by students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and is editorially independent of the University faculty, administration and student body.
